Sen. Knowland
Urges, Unity
In GOP Ranks
WASHINGTON tfl Sen. Know-
land (R Calif) called Saturday
for Republican unity behind the
Eisenhower legislative prozram.
He asserted" that the GOP record
in the 84th : Congress will have
direct bearing ion the outcome of
the 1956 presidential election.
Knowland; the Republican ben-
ate leader, himself has differed
from President Eisenhower on
some foreign ; policy issues, not
ably in calling for a blockade of
Red China. But the California sen
ator said these and other differ
ences among ! Republicans "have
been overemphasized and exag
gerated." M
He said the first tass 01 nepuo-
j
Iican congressional leaaera ana
the President Is to "hold the party
together and make a constructive
record of accomplishments in the
84th Congress. :
"We have first got to cross the
bridge of 1955 before we get to
1956," Knowland said.
He declined fresh comment on
an attack by Sen. McCarthy (R
Wis) on President Eisenhower.
Knowland dismissed talk of a
third party movement growing out
of ! McCarthy's criticism of the
oresident. I
"I . don't thins: tne proDiem 01
getting the party together is going
to i be as great as some people
make it out to be." he said.
He went on to point out that in
the first year of the 83rd Congress
he personally had . been credited
with support of 88 per cent 01 fcis-

He said this year he had supported
91 per cent of the presidential
proposals. 1 I T
Eisenhower has said Knowland s
differences with him were related
mere to method than to principles
Saying he agreed with the Pres

of the Eisenhower legislative pro
gram and assist in getting "a

PORTLAND (UP) Legislation
to provide harsher penalties in
cluding ! prison 'terms for fathers
who refuse to support their chil
dren may be introduced in Ore
gon's 1955 Legislature.
State Sea. Carl Francis of Day
ton said Saturday he is considering
such legislation. "I have been for
some time greatly concerned about
the social problems occasioned by
the neglect and refusal of fathers
to support their children, particu
larly in instances where there has
been a divorce and the mother
compelled to seek assistance! from
public welfare,"' he said, i
Francis said he has legislation
in the rough draft stage which he
is submitting to various agencies
for comment He said it could
make the crime of causing child
dependency a felony, thus making
imprisonment in the state peniten
tiary possible.

PAYETTE, Ida. (UP) I The
school! song of the Payette high
school has been expurgated of the
word "comrade." -The student
body voted almost unanimously
Friday to "cleanse" the alma
mater song of the word after they
decided that it had become part
of Communist usage .and was
therefore unfit for use by patriotic
American youths.
- Responsibility for choosing a
substitute word not appropriated
by the Communists and still hav
ing the proper syllabic content was
placed on the school yell leaders.
They chose the word "colleagues."
