Cost Divided
The Salem School District
would out up half of the money
for such a program and parents'
groups; or other organizations ' In
the areas the remainder.! A simi
lar setup now exists in the city
where i the school district foots
half the bill and the city the rest
. A supervisor would be needed
to take charge of the program In
each of the three areas. The matter-was
referred to the board's
recreation committee for consid

Referred back to the Salem
Planning and Zoning Commission
a petition from a group which
seeks to build a service; station at
the corner of Broadway and Col

from Highland School ! j 1
The construction of the station
would change the area from an
R-l to a C-l zone. The board
agreed to abide by the commis
sion's decision on the matter. I
Meanwhile Tuesday, a city build
ing permit was issued to Standard
Oil Co. of California for construc

station, and a suit is in Marion
County Circuit Court in an at
tempt by nearby property owners
to nullify tSe commercial zone
which allows the service station.

Planning engineer C. A. Mm

He said the zone revision com
rr.ittee had taken into consider
tion the likelihood that additional
business uses along Center Street
would, be sought in the next few
years, and that by expanding two
already-existing business centers
these needs might be met without
further zone change maneuver!
for some years to come. i 1
He referred to the expansion ol
business zoning at Center and
17th and in the block further east
where ! several medical clinic
buildings a drug store and other
buildings had gone up in recent
years.; The now-controversial gas
station site is in that block. At the
time of rezoning. the neighborhood
entered no protest. )
