Successor to Sen. McCarran

naming of a successor to Demo
cratic Sen. Pat McCarran, even as
member! of the veteran lawmak
er'a family planned burial rites for
Saturday. ; ',
State Democratic chairman
Keith Lee challenged Republican
Gov. Charles Russell over whether
he has the right to appoint a suc
cessor to fill the remaining two
years of McCarran's fourth term
in the Senate.
Lee, insisting that Nevada law
clearly provides that an election
be held in November, called bis
State Central Committee to meet
Friday and came a candidate.
Asks Baling
Russell.' meanwhile, asked Ne
vada's attorney general for a rul
ing. The governor's office said the
law "appeared to be hazy and
filled with supreme court decisions
from past cases."
Legal advisors to the governor
said privately, however, there was
no legal provision for electing
someone to fill McCam-n's unex
pired term. They said the gover
nor a appoinete would hold office
until January, 1957.

American ice-breakers, the Navy's
USS Burton Island and the Coast
Guard's Northwind, in their cold
warsn the Arctic this summer,
the skippers reported on their ar
rival hCTe Wednesday.
Cmdr. Everett A. Trickey, Long
Beach. Calif., of the Burton Is
land, and Capt. W. L. Maloney,
New York City, of the Northwind,
said they successfully navigated
McClure Strait, ice-strewn en
trance to the Northwest Passage,
the first time.
The expedition carried out ocean-
graphic and hydrographic lur
veys. It found better than usual
ice conditions but at times bat
tered through ice ranging from six
to 10 feet in thickness.
"Sometimes three feet of Ice
can stop you," Commander Trick
ey said. "But this ice had less
pressure on it and was easier to
break."
The expedition met and worked
with the 6,500-ton Canadian patrol
Ship Labrador, which had com
pleted a voyage from -the east
coast across the icy wastes, the
first naval vessel and the largest
ship to make such a passage. The
Labrador reached Victoria, B. C,
Tueday Bight
The two American vessels sailed
north from San Diego July 12.

the winner would replace the gov
ernor's appointee next January.
Plan Rites
While the dispute grew, the 78-
year-old McCarran's family - his
wife,: Martha; four daughters and
a son met with funeral direc
tors to plan Catholic burial rites.
Messages of condolence and tri
bute poured into the family of the
senator, who suddenly collapsed
and died Tuesday night minutes
after be made a strong plea be
fore a HaVthorne Democratic rally
for unity in the state Democratic
Party.
An ambulance carried the sena
tor's body back to his home town
oi Reno early Wednesday.
Sympathy Extended
President Eisenhower extended
his sympathy as did fellow mem
bers of the Senate in which Mc
Carran cut a powerful and often
singular figure for 22 years.
A delegation of congressmen and
senators, as yet unnamed, will at
tend the funeral. The rosary will
be Friday at S p. m. at St. Thomas
Aquinas Cathedral. The body will
lie iq state that evening, with an
honor guard from the Knights of
Columbus.
Pontifical mass will be celebrat
ed at the cathedral at 10.30 Satur
day morning. In the afternoon, the
body win be taken to the state
building for invocation, remarks
from senators and benediction by
Bishop R. J. Dwyer of the Reno
Diocese. ; -
' Burial will be Saturday after
noon in the McCarran family plot
in Reno.
Woman Hurt
In Accident
Files Suit
PORTLAND (UP) -k "guest
passenger," thrown from an auto
allegedly because of a defective
door latch, has sued two Baker
men and their employe for $20,434
in damages.
The passenger, Mrs. Joan Hess,
an Idaho resident, brought the Fed
eral Court action against E. B.
and Jack E. Bennett and their
employe. Marion Hughes.
, Mrs. Hess said she was thrown
about 60 miles an hour. She said
from the auto near Aurora when
it swerved abruptly while traveling
she was confined to Providence
hospital here for more than
mmtj( because of the accident.
She and her husband. Jerry Hess,
were being driven by Hughes in
an auto owned by the Bennetts to
Portland from Burns, according to
the complaint
