Oregon's Old Growth Forests, Trees Amaze English Visitor Oregon's old growth forests and its individual trees were a re velation to H. B. Howell, of Ivybridge, Devon, England. Accompanied by his daughter, Rosalie, he was conducted on a tour of the Douglas fir forests on the western Cascades and into the eastern Oregon pine states by Assistant State Forester and Mrs. Lynn F. cronemiller. . - .. Howell has forestry interests in England and came here' to learn something of forestry practices in Oregon and also to satisfy a long-standing desire to see the forests, and trees of the state of which he had heard so much in his native England. v: He was familar with many of the native Oregon species since he had secured specimens of the trees and' planted them on his English estate. However, he was greatly impressed by thef vast amount of the Oregon country mat is covered with forests. In discussing forestry problems in England, Howell stated that two world wars had resulted in a serious depletion of the most desirable species of trees and no great amount of effort had been made to restore them. However, they are now taking steps to improve these forests through thinnings and other ap proved forestry practices with the result that the inferior spe cies are now improving in quality and a value is becoming estab lished.
