Four girls who walked away
from Hillcrest School for Girls

BOILER BRINGS TRUCKS
Salem firemen were out in force
Wednesday, late afternoon when
they rushed to an alarm from the
Senator Hotel for the third time
since May 4. The alarm was caused
when a too-hot boiler started the
sprinkler system in the hotel base
ment and tripped the alarm. Fire
men reported no damage,

John Caugliell,
Former Salem
Zoner,Dies,
John R. Caughell, 50, long-time
Salem resident and one-time mem
ber of the Salem Zoning Commis
sion, died Wednesday at a local
hospital.
Death "came unexpectedly, the
family said.- Caughell was born
April, 1904, at Waupaca. Wise, and
came to Sakra as a young boy.
He lived here the rest of his life
and 1 attended the University of
Oregon. - ,
In recent years he . was district
manager of the Industrial Hospital
Association, having been affiliated
with that firm since about 1933
Prior to that he was for a time
employed with the U. S. Nation
Bank, Salem branch; '
He was married in Salem, May
5, 1928, to Lenta B. Baumgartner,
who survives. He was a Mason and
an Elk and a member of St Paul's
Episcopal Church, . where funeral
services will take place. His mem
bership with the Zoning Commis
sion Was about three years ago.
He was also an active member of
the Oregon Historical Society.
Other survivors include a son,
Jchn S. of Salem; daughter, Mrs.
John Laughary of Medford; aunt
Mrs. Harry Waite of Salem, and a
granddaughter, Kathleen Caughell
of Salem. 1

OSG Luncheon
Salem retail .florists- are in
charge of decorations and favors
for the graduation luncheon to be
held this noon at the Memorial
Union Building on the Oregon
State College campus as a cul
mination of the florists sales and
management rally being held this
week on the campus. Over 400
florists from all parts of. the
United States are attending the
floral designing classes.

ing and paving on the Hopmere
Wheatland junction section of the
North River road four miles north
of Salem was swarded by the
State Highway Commission here

tral Paving Company, Independ
ence, on a low bid of $58,271.50.
There was one higher bid receiv
ed at a meeting of the highway
commission in Portland June 24.

Meat Dealer Fined $50
Soy products in his hamburger
cost Salem meat dealer R. L. Mc
Dowell a $50 fine Wednesday in
Marion County, District Court.
McDowell, proprietor of Mc
Dowell's Market, 1190 S. 12th St,
had pleaded guilty to a charge
of selling adulterated food.' The
charge was brought by State
Agriculture Dept agents after a
routine check of Salem markets
early this month. .
, Bail was set at $50 for another
market operator, Da,vid Behm,
who had pleaded guilty to a
charge of offering for sale a mis
branded food. Agriculture Dept.
workers said they found sodium
benzoate in hamburger purchas
