The 33rd annual reunion and pic
nic of the descendants of Joseph
Cary Geer, Oregon pioneer of Ififl
was held at the estate of Mr. and
Mrs. A. A. Geer on Garden Road,
Jury 18.
More than 50 descendants with
families -attended .the picnic and
participated in festivities and pro
gram. Waldo Geer of Salem, pres
ident of the clan and Bert Geer of

ly known as Willard Carey gave

won International fame, and told

His fraternity is Sigma Nu. The
couple will live in Eugene; where

ling has been teaching in Eugene

absentee shower. For a little girl,
Julie Ann, was born to Mr. and
Mrs. Mayfield on Tuesday noon
at the Salem Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Mayfield is here for the
summer at thehome'of her par?

ter, while her husband is work
ing toward his doctorate degree
at the University of Washington.
In September the Mayfields' will
drive to Bloomington, Indiana,
where he will be vn the faculty

Weather continued right for 'the
forty-five Salem girls who spent
last week at Camp Kilowan, Camp
Fire Camp near Falls City. Half
of this number were Blue Birds,
from T .to10 years old, and for
the first time their week's pro
gram included a hike to "Thirty
foot FaHs" and an ; overnight
sleep-out . at' the hunters' cabin.
They, were back at camp for
breakfast, and none the worse for
their big adventure. "
! On -Friday the Blue Birds en
joyed i their first noon lunch, in
their own BluevBird Lodge. Re
frigeration recently provided,
makes it possible to receive ra
tions prepared in the main diningr
hall,' for special events in their
own quarters.- On this occasion
they celebrated the ninth birth
day of camper Sally Roberts,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle
Roberts. - '
Highlight of the week was again
the traditional Saturday evening
"banquet"-4his time a "come-as-you-are"
party. Camp director.
Miss Virginia Moses, had issued
invitations to the affair at varying
times throught the week, catching
the Blue Bird unit one. evening as
they donned pajamas for bedtime.
Affrnrlinff dinner in their naiamas
was something of the unusual, as
was the predicament ot anotner
unit of older girls who were "in
vited" while in their sleeping bags
during, an overnight trip.

Ice Box Cakes Take Pineapple

. There are some subjects in the culinary line that bear discus
sion on several occasions, and the ice box cake subject is one." .
We recently wrote a story, about using the refrigerator for .
these desserts and found so many interesting recipes that we'll
now write-a sequaL, . -
Chocolate's good, of course, and so are other flavors, hut"
there's a lot of goodness in icebox cake recipes that use fruit as
the chief interest, j ' ,
Pineapple,' for instance:
PINEAPPLE ICEBOX CAKE '
Vh, tablespoons cornstarch . Pinch of salt '
cup pineapple juice .eup butter ,
1 cups diced pineapple 1 cups confectioner's sugar.
- 4 eggs ,
Blend cornstarch and pineapple juice, add pineapple and
cook: until thick over hot water. Slowly pour on the slightly beat
en egg yolks, returning to the pan and cooking for three minutes
more over water. Add salt and cooL Line a nine-inch (or o
spring form pan with about 12 ladyfingers split, laying them,
close together and putting in broken pieces to fil cracks in the
bottom. i ,. - ;,
Cream together the' butter (which has been mashed and
washed to remote part of salt) and beat thoroughly. When
smooth and creamy stir in cold pineapple mixture then fold in
stiffly beaten whites and pour in the lined mold. Chill for 2
hours, then put on cake plate, remove mold and decorate with '
pineapple spears. The recipe serves 10. T '
Or good old faithful oranges: . ' j - '
ORANGE ICEBOX CAKE
Vi cup sugar !
cup lemon juice
4 eggs ' j
.1 cup butter J
2 cups confectioner's sugar
Dissolve sugar in lemon juice and heat in top of double
boiler until scalding hot. Beat egg yolks and add hot mixture
gradually, stirring welL Pour back in double boiler, cook until
thick and smooth-and let cooL Cream butter and add confection
er's sugar. Add orange pulp and rind.' Stir in cold egg mixture
and fold in egg, whites beaten stiff with vanilla and 2 table
spoons confectioner's sugar. Line bottom and sides of a spring
cake pan with cake or wafers, fill with mixture, alternating with
layers of cake, and set jn cold place for 24 hours. May be served
with whipped cream if desired.
' .Any nuts are good in icebox cake, as in other desserts, and
here is one .that features almonds: . .
ALMOND ICE BOX CAKE
cup fresh butter
lYt cups powdered sugar .
3; eggs I
1 cup chopped blanched
toasted almonds
Cream butter well, "work In sugar, add flavoring, egg yolks,
fold in beaten whites and nuts. Line mold with waxed paper,
lay macaroons on bottom, line sides with ladyfingers, put half of
cream mixture in mold, put on rest of mar coons, add rest of mix-
ture, let stand in refrigerator 24 hours. Macaroons may be crush
ed and sprinkled in layers if stale enough to crush.
