Caryl Chessman, the only best-
selling author in America who is
under a sentence of death, is hop
ing for just a little more time. He
wants, to finish his second novel
Chessman, whose "book "Cell
2455 Death Row" was .widely ae
claimed by critics and became a
best seller, said in a death-row
Interview his new work was about
80 per cent completed. .
i absolutely refuse to resign
myself to the Hde that I must:
die," he said. "I'm not giving up i
not after all this."
Chessman, who was condemned
under California's "Little Lind-i
bergh' law after his conviction on
17 counts of kidnapping, robbery
and rape, has lived in a tiny death
, row cubicle equipped only with a1
cot and toilet stool for the past
six years.' . (
. His first execution . date was
called off 'by a last-minute stay
.in 1952. The second was set for
last May 14 but postponed by a
stay, and the date finally was re
set for July 30. Chessman asked
the State Supreme Court again last
Friday for another stay.
The 32-year old convict is a
self admitted "criminal . psycho
path" but he emphatically denies
that he committed the crimes for
which he was condemned to die.
Chessman chain-smoked ciga
rettes as he leaned forward to
speak through the fine wire mesh
partition during an interview. His
jet black hair was highlighted by
the ashen' pallor . of his face as
he explained why staying alive "is
more important than ever now."
Chessman said the success of his
. fir sV novel written to stimulate an
hlightened public attitude" to
ward the problem . of crime, - had
inspired him to do more writing.
"Peing a good writer is more
important to me than anything,
because through writing I know I
could do a tremendous amount of
constructive) work," he said.
"I've got ti live. I've got to
be allowed to write and tell about
what can happen to a young kid's
mind and put him: where I am
today."
' Chessman said "Trial By Or
deal" would be "the story of death
- row ana capital puoisnmeni.
Chessman said the new book, if
his life is spared and he is al
lowed to complete it, would con
stitute his "subjective reaction" to1
the events that saw him develop
from a juvenile delinquent into an
adult criminal. .

U.S. Naval
Craft Leave
Manila Bay
MANILA . (UP) The American
aircraft carriers Boxer and Hor
net and four escorting destroyers
left Manila Bay Tuesday for, "oper
ations at sea," it was learned.
A spokesman for the U. S. Naval
station at Sangley Point said the
information "operations at sea"
came from the commander of the
U. Vlst fleet -There
was speculation that the
carriers, which left before their
scheduled departure, were en- route
to Indochina to participate in evac
uation operations. -
Another carrier, , the Tarawa,
meanwhile, steamed into Manila
Bay Tuesday.
The Sangley Point spokesman
admitted that the itinerary of the
six warships was under a "secur
ity blackout." - . -
