Deetz Optimistic of Milk
Eill Landing Spot on Ballot
Optimism was expressed by Elmer Deetz, known as Canby's
gMlon-juj; dairyman, here Sunday in connection with his cam
paign to place an initiative measure on the November general
ballot for repeal of the state milk marketing control law.
"If signatures to the petitions continue to come in at the
same rate as during the past 10 days I predict the measure will
be on the November ballot," Deetz
averred. He said more than 3.000
signatures were obtained in the
Salem area last week and -that pe
titions sent to other parts of the
state are being returned 70 per
cent filled.
The law provides that complet
ed petitions for initiative measures
on the next general election bal
lot shall be filed in the State Elec
tions Bureau not later than July 1.
Deetz said county clerks already
have checked a large number of
signatures to his petitions and
most of them were found correct.
Approximately 37,000 signatures
are required to complete initia
tive measure petitions.
May Be Completed

said two other proposed initiative
measures, for which nrpliminarv
petitions were filed, may be com-1 Q''P'e.

GOPCandidate
Said 'Plant'
Of McCarthy
By DOUGLAS B. CORNELL
PORTLAND, Maine ifi On the
eve of Maine's primary, Sen. Mar
garet Chase Smith said Sunday
night that ber youthful opponent
for Republican nomination appears
to have been planted in the race
Mrs. Smith, no friend of the
Wisconsin senator, is generally fa
vored to win handily over Robert
J. Jones of Biddeford, a McCarthy
"V"' wiiuuui using
Jones' name, that it's generally
known McCarthy came to Maine
last November for two speeches,
brought Jones with hirq and told
Maine people that Jones is the type
of man who should be in Wash-
1 intt.n
Pearson also remarked that at
the McCarthy-Army bearings, Mc
Carthy slipped and mentioned
Jones as "Senator Jones." Mrs.
Smith said she heard thai, and
tha slip apparently was "a little
wishful thinking."
The concensus of politicians, po
litical analysts and many plain
people in the pine tree state is
that Mrs. Smith will go out front
and stay there when the polls
close at 7 p.m., EST), and the
count starts rolling in.
