County As sessor Ed C. Dunn announced Tuesday. The check was conducted by the State Tax Commission. Dunn was instructed by the tax commission to revise all merchan dise and stock-in-trade assess ments for 1954. It; appears, he said, that numerous taxpayers, in fill ing out their 1954 personal prop erty returns, were confused by the headings on certain columns. Con sequently, the assessment roll as equalized by the county board of equalization was not in conform ity with the ad valorem property tax regulations of the tax com mission. Twe Weeks To File 4 To comply with the tax com mission's directive, Dunn is giv ing each merchandise owner the opportunity during the next two weeks to file a supplementary re turn showing the book value of hi inventory as of Jan. 1, 1954, in accordance with the tax com mission's regulations. A copy of the regulations is available for inspection in the as sessor's office. The tax commission will send a man to Polk County to verify all returns starting about June 10. Following verification that all re turns are correct, the assessor will make assessment on the ba sis of. 22 of true cash value, which is book value, to put in ventory assessments in line with real property assessments, Dunn said. Any incorrect return not cor rected by a supplementary re turn by June 10 will be subject to penalty for late filing: The State Tax Commission told Dump, that the county board of equalization will be reconvened to complete their job of equaliza tion as soon as, the final verifica tion of merchandise inventory as sessment has been made. Courthouse Dedication Date Proposed The date of June 18 for dedica tion ceremonies at the new Mar ion County courthouse will be pro posed to the courthouse planning commission, probably this week, Marion County court members said Tuesday. Judge Rex Hartley said he fav ored the date but would ask the commission. The courthouse has not been "formally accepted from the contractors yet, but the build ing is to be completed within the next two weeks, 'the court said. Work is still going on at the top floor level where the county jail is located. A portion of this floor will be ready late this week but it is probable no prisoners will be housed there until after the dedication. The court said tentative plans call for a week of open house pro grams following the dedication so that the building may be viewed by the public. It may be kept open several nights, also, for touring crowds. Heltzel Permits Gas, Coke Firm to Reclassify Stock Portland Gas & Coke Co. won permission Tuesday to reclassify its no par value common stock into shares with a par value of $19. Public Utilities Commissioner Charles H. Heltzel. who issued the order, said the present no' par value stock has a stated value of $18,959 a share. He added that the reclassifica tion would not affect stockholders' rights. Tti company believes the change will improve the sales of its stock. 1 k llilllllil Solem, Oregon BIG VALUES IN HOME HEEDS! r1 FOR LESS! I ' ' M - ' s MACHINE WASHABLE!
