Uncle Miltie's Hollywood telecast was fun from start to finish Tues
day night, with that proud product of the South, Phil Harris, giv
ing him a good run lor scenes ana creaiu. mey
re both pretty good at hogging the spotlight, you
know, Berle making no bones about it, even el
bowing a fellow player out of camera range, and
Phil in a more subtle but equally lethal manner.
I He simply uses that blinding charm and a loud,
rich voice.
This was the first of Milton's Western shows

The idea behind it all was for Phil to help Milton
settle into the grooves oj Hollywood living. It's a won
der it didn't drive Uncle Miltie straight back East. Eileen
Barton and Owen McGivney joined the regular cast to
help make it the hilarious hour it was. Eileen is noted
jor her recordings and Owen for the speed with trhich
he can don and shed clothes.
A lot of Hollywood night spots came in for some
free publicity as Phil dragged his supposedly wide-eyed
risitor from club to club. The old Southerner combined
some of that brand of hospitality with Hollywood glitter
and we'll bet the two of them are still laughing. We are.
STARR-DUST: Vera Vaeue. star of the ill-fated teleseries "Fol
low the Leader" that closed after 13 weeks last year has a new
series to debut this fall. She will serve as emcee for "A Scene with
a Star." Glenn Langan headlines the first show0 and Virginia Grey
plays the top role in the second film . . . "Junior Aces," Bob Fal
lon's telefilm series began production the other day. No guests are
allowed on the set for the first few films except Marie Wilson,
Bob's ever-loving wife . . . Following in Jack Webb's footsteps
Gene Autry has ordered four of his first television scripts written
and when completely they will make two feature motion pictures
. . . Note from English friend: Buster Keaton is a real smash hit
here in a new half-hour comedy show. BBC has gone all-out and
is inviting our visiting television stars to guest spots on their va
riety shows . . . And Gary Crosby's firt radio show (CBS) June 6
will feature the new spiritual recording that Jane Russell, Rhonda
Fleming, Connie Haines and Beryl Davis have popularized. The
girls will be on hand for the debut . . . Charlie Ruggles has a
chance to carry his homespun philosophies as "Mr. Sweeney" the
small town grocer into a complete and separate series if current
plans go through. Now a brief and occasional high spot on Kate
Smith's daily show, "Mr. Sweeney" is well worth a daily spot of
his own . . . Those of you traveling to Mexico or South America
can tune in and watch "Ramar of the Jungle," "The Adventures
of Ellery Queen," and "Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion,"
in Spanish yet! . . . Watch for the new Somerset Maugham TV
series for fall introduction. One of the better type high -budget
films that will stress good stories (writing) rather than name stars
. . . Sheldon Reynold's is TV's answer to Alfred Hitchcock. He
poses in every mob scene of "Foreign Intrigue" that he shoots . . .
