Vote to Strike
PORTLAND If AFL Lumber
and Sawmill Workers of the West
Coast are voting in favor of a
strike to get contract demands,
their newspaper, the Union Reg
ister, said Thursday.
"Substantial" votes favoring a
strike if necessary- to get a 12,
cent hourly pay increase were re
ported from the North Idaho-Eastern
Washington, Willamette Val
ley, Puget Sound, Everett and
Coos Bay districts.
Employes of the plywood and
door division of Simpson Logging
Co. at McCleary, Wash., voted 9-1
for a strike, their business agent
P. H. Motz, reported Thursday.
A number of locals still are to
vote. Among these are large locals
at Tacoma and Roseburg, which
have set their balloting for Satur-1
dav and Sunday.
Earl Hartley, president of the
Puget Sound council, said the vote
there was running 5-1 for a strike.
The CIO International ' Wood
workers already have approved a
strike in support of the same wage
demand but they postponed a May
3 strike and went back to negotia
tions which thus far have been
fruitless.
Employers have offered only to
renew existing contracts.

beginning that we were going to
