ABOARD THE S.S. INDEPEN
DENCE (INS) A large group of
American tourists recently was
given a preview of an Indian cul
tural exhibition which will be
presented next year in the United
States.
A group of musicians and
dancers from the Indian National
Theatre was brought aboard the
American Export line cruise ship
Independence to perform during
the voyage to Bombay.
K. D. Rao, secretary of the INT
and the director of the dancing
and music activities of the the
atre, announced aboard ship that
plans are being completed to take
a troupe of about 20 artists on
an extensive tour of America
during 1955.
Accord Enthusiastic
Judging from the enthusiastic
accord granted the performers
aboard the Independence the
American tour should be a suc
cess. In explaining the theater move
ment, started in 1944, Rao says,
"It is necessary that we express
ourselves to other people in the
same manner that we express our
feelings to ourselves."
The work of the INT, he stated,
is to promote a ;ultural renais
sance at home, now well under
way, and also to put the culture
of the nation before people of
other countries as a means tovard
better understanding of india
and its populace.
Indian musicians and dancers
have appeared commercially in
the United States in the past, but
Rao says this will be the first
time that a state-aided group is
going to America with the express
aim of international education.
The Indian National Theatre is
not a commercial venture, he
points out, and its skilled artists
participate in its program because
of a belief in the movement and
do so often at the expense of
giving up more lucrative oppor
tunities in the entertainment
field.
The secretary describes danc
ing as an integral, vital part of
Indian life and as such, a wonder
ful insight into an understanding
of the people. He says dancing is
. the Indian's principal way of en
tertaining himself and passing
away leisure time.
Folk Dancing Appeal
Pegging its appeal to this prom
inence of folk dancing, Rao says
the theatre organization under
took a program of revitalizing an
interest in classical dancing which
was almost completely lost dur
ing the period before India
achieved its independence.
To date the secretary says the j
reception of the INT presenta
tions in India itself has been ex
cellent and there has been much
interest manifest in the work of
the theatre.
The routines presented aboard
the Independence actually formed
something of an experiment for
the group, Rao explains.
They were able to learn what
parts of the dance could be easily
understood and were appreciated
by Americans.
This information will be used
in arranging the repertoire for
the United States tour next year.
WeaseV Gets
Big Brother
In U.S. Army
CAMP HALE, Colo. (INS)
The Army's "Weasel" now has
a big brother, appropriately
named the "Otter."
Troops participating in Exer
cise Ski Jump at Camp Hale,
high in the Colorado mountains,
tested the new vehicle.
The Otter is described in mili
tary language as a special-purpose,
cross - country cargo and
personnel carrier. It lives up
to the description by going al
most anywhere, including places
where foot - slogging infantry
would bog down.
The new carrier runs on full
rubber tracks, which are mount
ed on pneumatic rubber tires
rather than the conventional
hard rubber bogies. Instead of
dual brakes, it is steered by a
bicycle-type handle bar.
The Otter has a completely
enclosed aluminum hull. It will
carry a cargo of 3,000 pounds,
plus ten passengers and two
crewmen.
Officers at Camp Hale said
limitations of the vehicle "have
not been established" by the
tests thus far. However, among
other things, the Otter will tra
vel over sand, mud, and deep
snow too soft to bear a man's
weight. It will climb a 60 per
cent grade or splash into a
stream and plod along for six
hours at 44 miles an hour.
All it needs now. said one of
ficer, is an attachment so it can
fly, and another so it can "make
like a submarine."
