Bank of Oceanlake; and Mrs.
Jack Naylor, widow of the former
water district treasurer; and six
officers of the Newport State
Police office.
There were indications that the
jury will investigate a Water
district matter involving $750,
which the district entrusted to
Otto W. Cahill. a former com
missioner.
Cahill has been bound over to
the grand jury on a charge that
he converted the money to his
own use.
Cahill said earlier that he had
turned the money over to Jack
Naylor, water district treasurer
who since has died, and that
Naylor gave him a receipt for it.
The hearing was to resume
Wednesday after a one-day recess.

TOOTS BOOST SAFETY
MIDLAND, Mich. lf Teen
agers are off on a toot specifi
cally "two toots for safety." A
high school club and a citizens'
traffic safety committee initiated
the drive. Its object is to get the
motoring public to toot their
horns at drivers they observe
breaking traffic regulations.

Special Knife Aid
In Applying Butter
To Ears of Corn
Fred Stadeli and Paul Staedeli,
hop growers of Silverton, have in
vented a special butter knife for
applying butter to hot ears of
corn.
As everyone knows, it has been
difficult to keep butter on a regu
lar knife while applying butter to
a hot ear of corn. This new but
ter knife is a flat blade having
slots running lengthwise. These
slots grip the butter preventing
the same from sliding off.
The drawings have just been
completed for making application
for patent by J. T. Anderson, co
ordinator of inventions, who an
nounced he is attempting to ar
range for manufacturing of this
item here in Salem, thus adding
to the efforts of the Salem Indus
trial Council's plan of adding new
payrolls to Salem.
The State Agricultural Depart
ment Tuesday' "warned Oregon
nurseries and dealers who expect
to ship berberis, mahoberberis or
mahonia interstate that May IS

eral inspection.
All nurserymen and growers de
siring to ship these spedies to
other states during the shipping
season starting October 1 must
have their plantings inspected to
meet requirements of me federal
black stem rust quarantine. Ap
plication blanks will be mailed to
all nurserymen, dealers and seed
growers on the 1933 approved list
and those requesting inspection
for the first time this year.
Other requests for applicat 1
blanks should be directed to tho
