Turner, Jones
Scrap Tonight
Gil After Revenge
For Previous Loss
By RALPH BERNSTEIN
PHILADELPHIA i Gil turn
er, who insists he only has eyes.
tor Kid Gavilan. fights Bobby
Jones here Wednesday night for
the right to meet Joey Giardello.
If that sounds as clear as the
mud in your eye, that's the way
it's meant to sound. This nation
ally televised return match be
tween Turner and Jones of Oak
land, Calif., has more ramifica
tions than football's "sucker shift."
Let's start this story of intrigue
at the beginning. You see, last
March 24, Jones, a 3-1 underdog,
won a split decision over Turner.
Almost everyone at ringside agreed
Jones won. One judge, apparently
watching through one eye, called
it a draw.
Promoter Herman Taylor said
the crowd there were about 1,
200 customers clamored for a
return bout. So, after much dick
ering over money and weights, the
promoter obliged. An unestimated
throng, plus the CBS TV audience
can sit in on the encore starting
at 7 p.m. PST) Wednesday night.
Turner's manager George Kali,
Insists his boy has completed the
cycle of welterweight to middle
weight and back to welterweight.
Katz is angling, so he says, for a
Turner-Carmine Basilio fight, the
winner to meet Gavilan for the 147
pound crown. Meanwhile, he keeps
Turner at 151 pounds or more and
campaigns against middleweights.
Giardello Next Maybe
Should the 23-year-old Turner re
verse the last Jones verdict, pro
moter Taylor says he'll face Gi
ardello in an outdoor ball park
show this summer. Giardello is
listed as the next challenger for
Carl (Bobo" Olson's 160-pound ti
tle and holds one decision over
Turner. Katz says nothing when
Giardello's name is mentioned.
After all. Turner's a welterweight,
remember.
The 29-year-old Jones, father of
four, seems to have the most at
stake in this scheduled 10-round
battle. Another win over Turner
is supposed to earn him the Giar
dello shot. If he's licked, the Jones
boy will drift back into the ob
scurity he emerged from with his
triumph here a month ago. If
Jones can fight anything like he
did in his last meeting with Phil
adelphia Gil, he should repeat.
Another odd thing about this
strange-as-it-may-seem return bout
Is the odds. Turner, a well beaten
gladiator in the first Jones clash,
is a 2-1 wagering choice. Turner
has won 42 and lost 5. while Jones
carries a 36-19 and 8 draws record
into action.

LEBANON (Special) The
highflying Salem High Vikings
crashed to their fifth straight vic
tory of the campaign Tuesday
afternoon as they smothered the
error-plagued Lebanon Warriors
18-4 in district action. It was the
No. 3 district win for Coach Har
old Hauk's Vikings.
Salem belted out 11 hits in the
abbreviated six-inning mix to the
five given Lebanon by pitchers
Jack Loy and Gary Smith and
the winners were helped by 11
enemy miscues. The Viks got off
to a fast start with four runs in
the first inning and put the
clinches on with a seven-run blast
in the fourth that saw six hits
paraded over the premises and ten
men going to bat. Two more Sa
lem tallies came in the fifth and
five more in the sixth and last
frame.
Big blows in the big fourth were
doubles by Don Pigsley and Jack
Loy. The four Lebanon runs were
yielded by Loy in his five innings
of work and Smith then came in
for the sixth and fanned the side.
Loy picked up two doubles and
a single and knocked in three
runs and Tom Pickens belted in
four with a double and single.
Fred Bolton and Twink Pederson
were other Salem hitting leaders.
Salem plays host to Mt. Angel
Wednesday, 3:45, at Waters Park.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. OB Sam
Snead arrived on the scene of the
$35,000 tournament of champions
early Tuesday, took a long nap
and then headed for the Desert Inn
Country Club for a practice round
of golf.
The West Virginia star for the
second straight year is favored to
win the $10,000 top money for the
72-hole event which stalls Thurs
day, but the picture is very dif
ferent this time.
Sam is fresh Jrom a notable vic
tory, registered in a playoff for
the epic Masters with the redoubt
able Ben Hogan. And even more
to the point, Samuel Jackson Snead
is not suffering from the miseries
of an aching hand.
"Feel pretty good," said Snead
to host professional Howard
Capps, who dreamed up this tour
nament as an event restricted to
winners of a major open tourna
ment during the previous 12
months.
"Pretty good" was hardly the
word for Snead last year. He suf
fered recurrence of a bone injury
in his left hand and proceeded to
blow the works.
Included from the 1953 field is
Al Besselink, the longshot winner
of the tournament and regarded as
just as much an outsider this year.
Besselink's winning score was 280.
Rated close to Snead is Lloyd
Mangrum, who finished in a tie for
third. Mangrum toured the 7,102-
Vince Lombard!, line coach of
the New York football Giants,
was on the dean's honor list for
four years at Fordhara and was
graduated cum laude.
