Dewey Loses
Senate Fight
ALBANY, N. Y. W-The heavfly
Republican New. York State Senate
Saturday night defeated a compul
sory automobile liability insurance
measure for which Gov. Thomas
E. Dewey had waged a last-ditch
fight
The bill was the only major ad
ministration measure killed at the
1934 session, which ended Saturday
night, but the defeat was viewed
as a severe blow to Dewey's lead
ership of the Republican Party in
a state election year. ;

CHICAGO (INS) Malaria, once
the scourge of armies fighting in
tropical areas, is no longer a mi
litary problem. -
The U. S.. Army surgeon gener
al. Maj. Gen. George E. Arm
strong, said a new drug prima-
auin has practically eradicated
the disease. '
Gen. Armstrong reported that
less than one per cent of the sol
diers in Korea exposed to malaria
developed the disase if they ad
hered to the primaquin pill diet.
The surgeon general, who re
cently returned from his fifth trip
to Korea, said the new drug not
only can cure malaria, but does
not incur the toxic after effects
of its forerunners.
Atabrine, World War Ira anti-
malaria drug, and chloroquin
which was used early in the Korea
fighting, were not permanent
cures.
Infected men usually developed
malaria again when they stopped
taking these drugs, and atabrine
caused a yellowish appearance in
the victim. -
Gen. Armstrong said "a dauy
dose of primaquin, taken orally
for 14 days, apparently perm an
ently cures that individual infec
tion." . S
The drug, now available com
mercially was developed in tests
on volunteers from inmates of tne
I Illinois State Penitentiary at Joi
liet . $
Some 8,000 organic chemical
compounds were tested from 1951
until the summer of 1952, when
success was achieved. The tests
were conducted by Dr. Alf S. Al-
ving of the University of Chicago
estimated oil reserves in the Unit
ed States are 80 billion barrels.)
Goldhar said 62 test holes, total
ing 13,983 feet, were drilled last
year; by the group of companies.
Early trappers first learned of
the oil saturated bands from In
dian! who used to doze from out-
croppings on the river banks as a
for canoes. These outcrop
ping! range from several feet to
more than 200 feet along loo miles
of the river. A strip mining opera
tion iwill have to be devised to re
cover the oiL
In 1930 the Research Council of
Alberta built a small pilot plant
on the Clearwater River, a tribu
tary; of the Athabaska, to develop
a commercial method oi extracting
crude oil from the sands. Other
pilot plants later were built by the
International Bitumen Co. and Ab-
asand Oils Ltd.
Several methods have been pro
posed for extracting the oil. These
include a distillation process which
dissolves the oil in a solvent But
experts believe a "hot water" me
thod will be used for commercial
production.
In the hot water process the mix
hire of oil, sand and water is heat
ed. The oil separates from the sand
and collects in small flecks form
ing if kind of floating pulp.
Goldhar says once oil recovery
plants are established they would
havei a capacity of 100,000 barrels
day. Exploration has shown that
the sands contain from 30,000 to
90,000 barrels of oil an acre.
The recovered oil would be sent
by pipeline to the Great Lakes ter
minal of the Canadian pipe line
system. M

Science has proved that many

the vitamins taken in the diet,

If you, like so many other

this condition with various oils
