McKay for
Dam Plans

(Ind-Ore) asked Secretary of In
terior McKay Saturday what he
has in mind concerning Snake Riv
er development, specifically Moun
tain Sheep Dam.
In a prepared statement Morse'
said that when McKay announced
withdrawal of the .department as
an intervenor against the Idaho
Power Company's three proposed
Snake R'ver dams: "he threw out
a smoke screen by way of a vague
reference to a dam at the Moun
tain Sheep site on the Snake River
below Hells Canyon."
Morse said the Bureau of Recla
mation's regional office at Boise,
Idaho, recently reported that in
an experimental 'tunnel at the
Mountain Sheep site it had en
countered "very poor rock," and
had admitted that investigations
to date show the site "is not suit
able for a high dam."
"This report must have caused
McKay much embarrassment and
his silence is understandable,"
Morse declared, "but we are en
titled to a prompt statement . of
his position on the regional bu
reau's Mountain Sheep report ,
"The secretary should tell us
what he now has in mind with
respect to Snake River develop
ment, and he should explain why
he suggested in a public statement
of May 5, 1933, that Mountain
Sheep was one of several projects
that could be used "with the same
locic as that proposed for Hells
Canyon for the purpose of the
creation of reclamation subsidy.
"His alibi had better be good
because residents of the Pacific
Northwest and .people throughout
the nation are becoming more and
more aware of McKay's disserve
to the people's interest in the field
of electric power.

train one day. . He got the urge to
write a joke book.
He did write it And one of the
funniest things', a half-century la
ter, is that it Is still selling even
in the TV era when a new gag
lasts no longer than a lighted ci
gar. f ,

Grandpa r read the book while
riding to the World's Fair in SL
Louis in 1904. One of the first stor
ies he came to was this one about
a snail-paced train:
"A lady j handed the conductor
two tickets, one whole ticket and
a half .ticket.! He said, 'Who is the
half ticket for?' She said, My
boy. The conductor said, 'He's not
a boy; he'is a man. Under 12 half
fare, over; 12 full fare." She said,
'He was under 12 when we start
ed.' M if
Farther along in the paper-back
volume, and this one will slay you:
"When the train stopped we all
rushed for the dining room. I or
dered two; soft boiled eggs. When
the waitress brought them in, she
opened one and said, 'shall I open
the other? 1 said, no, open the
window.' " f

Dad,' like grandpa, picked up the
book at a newsstand in a railroad
depot, Dad's son can buy one there
or at a! bus station. If he does.
he will find a homespun epigram i
about a bride:
"Before marriage a mancatches
her in hii arms, after marriage
he catches: her in his pockets."
Or this courtroom classic:
"They! brought another fellow in
charged, with stealing nine bottles
of beer. The judge told him he
would have to go back and get
the other three. He couldn't make
a case out of nine."
The author of this perennial pub
lication; Thomas W. Jackson, was
big and jolly. But there was noth
ing about his early life to indicate
he would produce a book that
would sell seven million copies.

brakeman on trains in Texas, Ar
kansas, Missouri and the Pacific

er. He swapped stories with drum
mers, as the traveling salesmen
of that era were called and ac
cumulated considerable joke lore
He was working for the Oregon
Washington Railroad and Naviga
tion Co. when he read a joke book.
He told Jim Burns, the conductor
on his train: j
"I think I can beat that." j
"Why don't you try it?" Burns
retorted. j '
Jackson did. He wrote out the
jokes, and took his sheaf of notes
to the Inland Printing Co., in Spo
kane, Wash. The first editions of
"Slow Train" were printed there
in 1903. f I
That fall Jackson moved to Chi
cago and founded his own publish
ing house. The next year, in 1904,
he brought out a second volume,
"Through Missouri On A Mule."

He produced, in all, 12 joke
books. His son and successor,
Harry, wrote one. When Tom Jack
son died in 1934, Harry took over
the firm, which is doing business
at the 'same address, 711 S. Dear

The 13 books, with illustrations
added and some minor updating
revisions, are still being published
and sold at a rate of about 300,
000 a year. . 1 -
Total sales of all the books is
estimated at 13 million.
Harry, now 65, says he has no
salesmen -on the road, but repeat
orders keep coming in to his
surprise. ' 'I
"They're like the old movies on
TV," explains his wife. Bessie.
"We're selling a new generation."

NEW YORK m The stock
market broke its winning strike
this week and declined for the
first time in 1954.
; For the first six weeks of the
new year, the stock market ad
vanced sharply in an almost
straight line.
f This week it suffered its sharp
est setback of the year on Tues
day, and it never fully recovered
from that shaking.
The turn down was not unexpect
ed. The market seldom maintains
a sustained advance for as long
as six weeks without a reaction.
i: Can this current decline con
tinue? The answers Ts "yes".
Brokers say it wouldn't be sur
prising to see the market go down
from one-third to two-thirds of the
previous advance before it gath
ers in enough buying support to
try for another rise.
But, the market doesn't have to
go down. Many brokers believe
that the market could hold its re
action to minor dips while mark
ing time for another try at a new
high.
Soybeans on
Rise Again
CHICAGO in Old crop soy
beans again raced upward on the
Board of Trade this week, but
this time they did it without any
company. Other grains declined
while new crop soybeans held
about unchanged.
Gain in old crop soybeans ranged
from 6tt to S cents, all of them
setting new season highs.
What closed the week - 1
lower, corn 1 2 lower, oats
1 - 2tt lower, rye 44 to 5 cents
lower, new crop soybeans lower
to Vt higher and lard unchanged
to 15 cents a hundred pounds high
