tional Swedish cakes and cookies during the tea hours.

The Lucia Ceremony
Highlighting the Salem Garden Club annual
Christmas Greens Show Tuesday and Wednesday
at the lzaak Walton Clubhouse between 1 and 9
pm. each day will be the Lucia ceremony. The
Swedish Yule begins on Dec. 13 and is called
'Luciadagen" or St. Lucia's Day. It is celebrated
every year with many lights and gracious hospitality.
In the homes the Lucia Legend is enacted by the
eldest daughter, who awakens each member of the
household early in the morning.
Robed in white with crimson sash and wearing
a crown of greens and lighted candles she sings
as she carries a tray of coffee and traditional buns
and cookies to members of the family. She is the
embodiment of the Christmas spirit In the evening
she sometimes goes about the village accompanied
bv little boys, also in white, carrying stars and
candles, and singing the Christmas carols.
The Lucia ceremony, which ushers in the Christ
mas season in Sweden, will be given at the Salem
Garden Club show Tuesday and Wednesday after,
noons at 3:30 p.m. and at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night

sages, decorated trees, exhibits by other garden
clubs in the valley, table settings and demonsta
tions each day. Mrs. James H. Turnbull is general
chairman of the show with Mrs. Clifford Taylor,
club president, co-chairman.
