Heavy Seas,
Winds Thwart
Rescue Effort
SEATTLE (in Gale winds and
heavy seas in the Pacific were
reported by the Coast Guard Fri
day night to have defeated all ef
forts of the Seattle tug Agnes Foss
to get a line aboard the crippled
freighter Margo.
' The tug reached the Margo at
f a. m. but winds up to 40 knots
an hour and waves 20 feet high
made it impossible to secure a
line before darkness and weather
closed in.
The freighter has been drifting
helplessly about 1,100 miles off the
Oregon Coast for a week since
she lost a propeller inbound to
Portland. The Agnes Foss ar
rived on the scene after a six
day rescue voyage from Seattle.
The cutter Koiner radioed Coast
Guard headquarters here that the
tug would be forced to wait out
the "blow" before trying again to
take the Margo under tow.
Two cutters and a Coast Guard
tug will escort the tow to port.
