Luthros Hosts On Sunday SILVERTON More than 100 guests called at the open house of the Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Luthro Sunday between the hours of 3 and 5, and 7 and 10 p.m. The dining table was centered with autumn colored chrysanthe mums arranged by Mrs. Eldon Thayer, sister of the Rev. Mr. Luthro, and a huge basket of deep pink gladiolus set off effec tively the newly redecorated living room in its two shades of soft greens. While the open house is to be an annual event, Sunday's affair was special because friends of the Luthros were also asked to greet the Thayers, recently mar ried in Fairbanks, Alaska, and returning there this week. Mr. Thayer is with the national park service and is stationed at Mc Kinley Park. Mrs. Thayer, who has visited here a number of times, has been with the exten sion service in Alaska. .Asked to pour during the afternoon were Mrs. J. C. Larson and Mrs. Adolph Haugen, while pouring during the evening were Miss Thora Arestad, Mrs. M. G. Gunderson and Mrs. James Phil lips. Bridge Team Winners Are Announced ; .' ; ,:..., Team-of-f our duplicate bridge championship of Salem for the coming year went to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Kimsey, Mrs. Walter M. Cline and Charles Tambling after a gruelling two-session tournament at the ' Elks Club over the weekend. Trophies went r . 10 we winners. In second place were Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Frasier, John Pugh of Shedd and Mrs. Jose AoriXx of Corvallis, while third went to Mrs. Harry Wiedmer and Mrs. Paul F. Burris, and Ralph S. Dannen and Mrs. Dorothy Rem mey, both of Brownsville. The ?nly all-out-of-town team tied for ourth place after leading dur ing the first half of the meet They were Mr. and Mrs. Duane Pinkerton of Gladstone and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Peterson of Portland. Main event on this week's tour nament program will be the first October master point Friday eve ning. The first mid-week tourna ment will start the following Wednesday, Oct" 7 at the Wom en's Club. The senior and junior series will continue Monday eve nings at the Elks Club. Betrothal Of Duo Told Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kleczynski of Gervais are announcing the en gagement of their daughter. Miss Joan Darlene Kleczynski, to Vin cent Steinkamp ,son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Steinkamp cf Brooks. No date has been set for the wed ding. The bride-elect is a graduate of Gervais Union High School and is now employed at the Public Utilities Commission. Her fiance attended Mt Angel Prep School and Seattle University. He ex pects to leave soon for service in the army. New Auxiliary Lions Club Meets A charter banquet for the Keizer Lions Auxiliary was held in the fireplace room of the Jason Lee Methodist Church on September 23, with state and district officers present Presentation of the charter was made by Mrs. Clarence Humble of Klamath Falls, state president of Lions auxiliaries, with Mrs. Burton Dunn of Cor vallis, 3rd vice-president acting as installing officer. Officers in stalled were Mrs. Mel Pillette, president; Mrs. Fred Reinwald, vice-president; Mrs. John Coom ler, secretary; Mrs. Gordon Bressler, treasurer and Mrs. Wal lace Weathers, Lion Trainer. Mr. James Tindall, district gov ernor, was principal speaker. Toastmaster for the evening was Mel Pillette, president of Keizer Lions Club. King of Independence, who recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a reception at the Monmouth Christian Church. Club Calls Special Meet Salem Woman's Club members will hold a special meeting on Friday afternoon, October 2 at the clubhouse at 2 p.m., according to announcement made by the presi dent Mrs. Frank Marshall. Executive board members will serve as hostesses. The purpose of the meeting is to hear a recording of the General Federation of Wo men's Clubs convention held last May in Washington, D. C. Club members as well as inter ested persons are invited to attend.
