Salem's Volunteer Aide pro
gram at the Oregon State Hospi
tal is scheduled to begin Monday,
said Mrs. Cecil Wickline, state
and Salem chairman of the Coun
cil of Church Women's rehabili
tation committee.
The program is sponsored by
the Oregon Council of Churches
and the Salem Council of Church
Women. -
Ten graduates of previous Vol
unteer Aide programs will begin
work at the state institution Mon
day afternoon but classes for
new volunteers won't begin until
Oct 5, Mrs. Wickline said.
Classes, to run for two weeks,
will meet Monday, Wednesday
and Friday, she explained, and
added that evening classes will
also be held for both men and
women who would like to help
during the winter program.
After attending the classes,
volunteer aides will work one
afternoon a week for six months.
The work includes reading aloud
to patients, teaching handicraft,
sewing, typing, baking, playing
games with patients and giving
home permanents.
Classes preparing volunteer
aides for their work in the state
hospital are similar to those given
to persons hired as psychiatric
aides at the institution, Mrs.
Wickline said.

V m EM TAKE A CURE
Logs Break
Free of Raft
About 800 logs secured to the
east bank of the Willamette Riv
er in a cove across from West Sa
lem broke loose about 7 a. m.
Wednesday, but most of them
ended up on a sand bar a short
distance away.
A spokesman for Oregon Pulp
and Paper Co. said apparently
waves from a passing boat had
caused lines holding the logs to
snap. None of the logs got com
pletely away due to low water.
Crews went to work immedi
ately rounding up the stray logs
and about half were in place by
noon.
It will take two or three days
to pick up the rest the spokesman
said.
S100 Stolen
From Brooks
Gas Station
Statesman News Service
BROOKS The Ramp and Var
bel Chevron service station here
was burglarized of $100 in change
about $50 of it in dimes some
time Tuesday night or early Wed
nesday, state police reported.
The money was taken from the
cash register after entrance was
made by forcing open a rear door
and then an office door. Mer
chandise in sight was not taken.
Owners Sam Ramp and Jess
Varpel told police dimes from
a soft drink machine had been
put in the cash register when
the station was closed Tuesday
night at 10:30.
Norblad Says
AF Budget Cut
Fully Justified
Recent cuts in the air force
budget by the Eisenhower ad
ministration were fully justified,
U. S. Rep. Walter Norblad, 1st
Oregon district, declared in an
address before members of Am
erican Legion Post 126 Tuesday
night in Salem.
Norblad said in the past it has
been the habit of congress to give
the military almost anything it
asked with the result that there
has been too much waste.
"If the cuts in the military ap
propriations are too great they
can be restored in whole or part
when congress reconvenes next
January," Norblad declared.
Norblad said investigation
showed that because of the gener
ous policy of congress the air
force now has $29 billion of
carry-over and unexpended funds.
He added that the air force carry
over for last year is equal to al
most half the money required to
operate the entire government.
