Aboard the USS escort control
vessel 896 in the Far East is
David E. Hill, radarman third
class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Elwyn N. Hill. 1425 Saginaw St
Hill attended the Oregon College
of Education prior to entering
the Navy on Jan. 7, 1952.
Also in the Far East aboard
the fleet tug USS Lipan is Don
ald G. Vancleave, seaman, USN,
son of Mrs. Moris Vancleave, Sa
lem Route 2, Box 454.
At Fort Slocum, N. Y., is Air
man Second Class James L. Gor
man, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C.
Gorman, Wood burn. He recently
began a six week course of in
struction in Information and
Education at the Armed Forces
Information School there.'

Award Given
LL R. V. Schmidt, son of Mr.
and Mrs. J. P. Schmidt, 655 Cat
terlin Ave., has received a com
mendation for meritorious per
formance of duty while serving
aboard the naval tanker, the USS
Cimmarron.
A supply officer, he was com
mended for his able distribution
of freight consigned to the units
in the task force during the pe
riod from June 12 to July 28. Lt
Schmidt has been in the navy for
19 years.
The first Spanish missions in
New Mexico imported cuttings of
grape vines from Spain.
