-Bearcats Gird -- CPS Provides Test Here Saturday Night ItVfeVeriaMjr working against time to polish up' the plays and put teeth in the defense for Willamette's, Bearcats this week as they prepare themselves for the 1953 season opener against John HeinrickTs College of Puget Sound - Loggers at HcCuIloch Stadium "Saturday night. The Bearcats had too many ragged moments in the game scrimmage of last week end- to give any peace of mind to Head Man Ted Ogdahl and Line Mentor Jerry FreL The Willamettes dont yet know too much about the Tacoma eleven that'll provide their open ing test, but- Heinrick always manages to field a tough, scrappy outfit Last season the two teams fought to a wide-open and thrill ing 20-20 deadlock at Tacoma. Ogdahl probably won't know until the end of the week who'll be his starters against the Log gers. Likely to see plenty of action, however, are Backs John Kent, Lou Lofland, Bobby Zoelch, all of -whom are lettermen, plus such freshmen as Windy Sequiera , of Hawaii, Volney Sigmund of Bend and Harvey Neffendorf. Mainstays in the line will in clude Bean Benson, Dave Ander- ' son,. Bob Dyer, Norm Dversdal, Ken Cooper, Dorence Noteboom, Rube Menashe, Mike Hovis and Cliff York, all letterman last year. Woodburn Set For 1st Clash WOODBURN -(Special)- The Woodburn High Bulldogs, oper atating under new Coach Hank Ercolinl this year, open their football season at Stayton next Friday night The Bulldogs are this week undergoing their sec ond week of tuneups. Ercolinl has 11 letttermen on hand in his turnout, but reports that the squad has no depth at alL Of the 11 vets, only Gene Fi cek at halfback is the lone 1952 regular. Along with Ficek, the letter men are Ends Ray Eskelson and Don Enyart, Tackles C. Gruver, Rich Lee, Gary Raid and Sid Clark, Guards Elwood Ostrum and Dick Alexander, Center Ron Garnero and Quarterback Jerry Plank. Other leading candidates for starting berths are Backs Don Stafney, Dick Mills and Henry Kraemer, . Guards ., Bill Kersten and Ken Gates, Center Jerry Ed wards and Tackle Bob Prinslow. The Bulldogs will use a wing-T offensive this year. Two six-man and three 11-man football clashes are to be held during th evening in a jamboree that will get started at eight o'clock. i Detroit, Oregon School for the Deaf and St Paul will play in the two 6-man games, St Paul field ing two teams for the occasion. These games will be of 15-minute lengths. j Gervais, Mill City, Sublimity, Jefferson, Chemawa and Scio, the latter a new member of the lea gue this season, will play in the trio of 11-man games which also will be 15-minute affairs. Drawings for opponents will be announced later by league offi cials. The regular Marion County p League race isn't slated to get started until Sept 25, but Gervais has a clasL slated with Estacada High next Friday night on the lighted Woodburn Legion Park field. The stock cars are to provide the program, which will end with a 100-lap main event, longest race of the Salem season by 25 laps. It will be the final appear ance of the stock cars here this season.
