Blind to Profit
By Dog Show
Here Sunday
An all-breed dog show Sunday
at the State Fairgrounds will
bring 506 show dogs to Salem.
Judging will go on from 9 a.m.
to 8 p.m., open to the public.
The show is sponsored by Sa
lem Lions Club as a benefit for
widely-known non-profit school
for the training of guide dogs
and the blind persons who use
them. This is Guide Dogs for the
Blind. Inc., San Rafael, Calif. The
funds will come from sale of ad
mission tickets.
Aim of the school corresponds
"with one of the Lions clubs' ma
jor aims that of helping the
blind to support themselves.
The school breeds most of its
own stock, confining this program
to German shepherds and Labra
dor retrievers. Two measures are
taken to insure that the dogs are
trainable as guides. Puppies are
tested weekly by volunteers for
five consecutive times, beginning
at eight weeks; those not measur
ing up in intelligence and temper
ament are discarded.
At the age of three months
selected puppies are placed in fos
ter homes - chiefly among 4-H
Club members. At the age of one
year, they are returned to the
school and given three months of
intensive training before they are
teamed with the blind students
for another month of education
together.
No charge is made to the blind
for their guide dogs and equip
ment or for the room and board
during their month's residence
training. The training work relies
entirely upon public subscription
raised by volunteer workers.
By July 1, 1953, guide dogs had
been given to 293 women and
men 16 guide dogs have been
given to residents of Oregon.
