Arrivals of new wheat in Chi
cago haven't been heavy yet, but
the harvest is getting into high
gear and receipts are picking up.
The first wheat from Southern
Illinois and Southern Indiana ar
rived this week. Plenty more is
to come.
All of this .wheat was a little
too much for the wheat market
this week.
Prices usually are lower at
harvest time, but, are even more
so this year because storage is
1 filled to capacity and many farm-

Wheat prices fell vott to 9
cents below a week ago Friday.
Corn was 3 cents higher, to

pounds higher.

market is winding up the first six
months of 1953 in a decided down
trend, with prices : sharply below
their best for the period. . " , n
As the .halfway mark neared,
the market was trying , hard to
pull safely away from the lows of
the year, reached this month. '
Wall Street observers generally
thought there was a 'good chance
for a rally in July and August,
traditionally a time for upward
markets.
But no one was talking about
8 new assault on the old highs.
Rather, there was speculation on
wnetner the bull market of the
last few years had come to an
end. , , ; - ,
A look at the Associated Press
average of 60 stocks shows that
the; market has worked lower
since the first week in January.
After two tries -at reaching the
high made in that week, the mar
ket started down.
The average is off nearly 10
points since January. And indivi
dual snares are down as much
as 15 points or more from their
highs for the period.
