The "birthday of the church" will be observed Sunday by
Christians, who call the day Pentecost or Whitsunday.
It is the anniversary of the descent of the Holy Spirit on
to the 120 Christians assembled at Jerusalem SO days after
Christ's resurrection. They were given a baptism of fire and the
power of the Holy Spirit for the church as an organizatiqn.
The group had gathered in observation of the Jewish fes
tival of thanksgiving known as Pentecost or Shabuoth. They had
been directed to wait for this visitation of power before be
ginning their ministries. '
The day became known as Whitsunday after the English
and other North Europeans called it White Sunday from the
white garments worn by newly baptized persons. For that area,
the climate was much better for outdoor baptism at Pentecost
'than at Easter. '
Because of its origin, the day is favorite among churches
for baptism, confirmation and reception of members. w

Trio Graduates
Statesman News Service
HAZEL GREEN Why does
one person ' become a success
while another with apparently
similar opportunity ' become a
failure in the business world?
The answer is found in human
relationship, Carl Aschenbrenner,
Parrish Junior High principal,
told the graduating class at Hazel
Green Wednesday night. He said
that the key to successful human
relationship is in making those
with whom we come in contact
feeL important and appreciated
rather than emphasizing our own
importance.
The three graduates were Jerry

As a. part of the graduating

Cora Clark were presented with
