Herbert Smith announced "Wednesday. The meeting, in Lausanne Han on the campus, will open the - Salem portion of the campaign, headed by Tinkham Gilbert, mer chant. Smith said it is expected to raise $200,000 in Salem. Speaking before some 30 bust nessmen, alumni and friends of the university will be Truman Collins, co-chairman of the na tional program; Charles E. Mc culloch, president of the board of trustees, and Robert Notson, chairman of the Portland cam paign. All are from Portland. Authorization of a financial campaign for $1,000,000 to con struct a new fine arts building and auditorium and a women's dormitory, was voted by the uni versity trustees in February. Construction of the new build ings will be the first step in a $5,000,000 long-range program. They will be the first units in a new quadrangle' buildings on the old SweeUand athletic field. . The miivprsitv has been crom- ised a contingent gift of $250,000 toward the project. The anonyr mous donor has stipulated that tmtti Knildlnes must rise at the same time and the gift will be effective when the university has raised at least another $400,000. The new university structures will be of modern concrete and brick construction and will pro vide the latest in auditorium, fine ni-fs drams.
