Strawberry
Carryover Not
Major Problem, Growers Told
lUUnus News Service
SELVERTON While 6 per cent more strawberries are in cold
storage now than a year ago at this time, the carryover shouldn't be
much of a problem to the strawberry growers this year, Henry Ens
ley, manager of the" Oregon City plant of the J. M. Smucker Co., told
some 100 berry growers which met Wednesday at the Knights of Pv-
tmas nan.
Demand has been very good
since the first of the year, Entity
continued, adding that with the
acreage up only 500 acres In the
entire United States the year
'ahead would indicate a good one
for the berrymen.
When looking at a long range
program for strawberries, Ensley
said that in the future emphasis
should be put on greater produc
tion per acre and not expansion
acre-wise. He urged, too, a defin
ite program to make the consum
er quality conscious.
California Gains
Statistically speaking, Ensley
pointed out that in 1841, Califor
nia produced 8 per cent and Ore
gon 10 per cent of the strawberries
grown in the United States, while
in 1952, California produced 24
per cent and Oregon 13 per cent.

financial returns for 1933, Ensley
stated in his outlook talk.
Dr. Karl Baur, formerly with
Washington State College, and now
director of research in the chemi
cal division of the Pacific Supply
Cooperative, spoke on fertilizer,
stating that you cannot crow
berries without heavy fertiliza
tion, lie suggested 650 pounds per
acre of 47 or 48 per cent treble
phosphate and 100 pounds of am
monium nitrate an acre. The Wil
lamette Valley, he said, was notab
ly low in phospherous. The fertil
izer should be put on the ground
before the strawberries are plant
ed. .
Field Editor
Gene McNulty, field editor for
the Oregon Farmer, and a former
Woodburn youth, urged growers
to think "more on the quality of
Marsh alls." This variety in Mc
Nulty s opinion, is a "quality
berry" and should be publicized
as such.
Don Rasmus sen of Salem, spoke
briefly, on strawberry growth regu
lators, urging growers to do some
experimenting with - these before
they give their entire fields this
chemical. He admitted that' the
first, experiments, were looking
promising. .-, ,
Lloyd A. Westover, Oregon City,
served as chairman. Other speak
ers during the day-long program
included John Dennison of the U.
S. soil conservation office at Silver-
