Stevens & Son Combination
Finds Business Fascinating
(Editor'! note: Father and ton combinations are found In a wide variety
of Salem professions, businesses and trades. Here la another In a Statesman
series on such partnerships.)
Allan Stevens got into the Jewelry business by the rather unique
method of going one year to Willamette University Law School.
Al is the "son of Stevens & Son, operators of one of Salem's
largest and most handsome establishments. The other member Is Sid
ney L. Stevens, congenial, long-time Salem jeweler.
"I think," said Al the other day, "Dad pushed me into law to
force me to make up my mind to
enter the jewelry business. Dad's
been in the trade ever since I can
-emember. I was raised in the
usiness."
At this point Sid got into the
iterview.
Fm kinda glad now that Al

wouldn't be able to run the store
without him. The work is too much
for one man. Besides he's become
an excellent jeweler and he's stu

way to wait on a customer Al

there is the satisfaction of helping
customers choose what they want.

As to who will carry on the
Stevens name In the jewelry trade
in the distant future?
"Well," Al notes with a touch of
pride, "I've got four kids three
boys and a girl. My oldest son, Al

EUGENE IF) Henry R. Luce,
editor-in-chief of Time, Life and
Fortune, said Friday that the U.S.
press can improve only if its re
porters, editors and publishers feel
a personal responsibility in the in
tegrity of their work. .
Luce told the 34th annual Oregon
Press Conference that he felt
shame and humilitation because
the press was excluded from the
Jelke trial in New York City.
He told Oregon newspaper edi
tors and publishers that the court
barred the press only because the
press too often had-used its free
dom to pander. .
It is. "cynicism at the heart of
American life " for any part of the
press to believe that it must amuse
the reader or give readers a va
riety of viewpoints, he said.
Entertainment for. the readers Is
justified only If the press also pro
vides a rational and sober account
M A
ox current events, a recogmzame
picture of the readers own en
vironment and becomes a vessel
of truth." Luce said.
Referring to the variety of view
points presented in some publica
tions, he said, "If an owner-pub
lisher is seriously responsible for
every word in his newspaper he
ought not to publish any columnist
whose basic integrity he doubts
or with whose basic philosophy he
disagrees." ; . f
He also mentioned Sen. Joseph
McCarthy (R-Wisc) and said:
. There Is one challenge which
can be made effectively to Sen.
McCarthy, who claims to be a
Christian. That is the challenge of
charity.
Freedom depends on one thing:
that we trust each other. Since no
one of us whiUy trustworthy, it
implies another thing: that our
constant judgments of each other
shall be made not sentimentally,
but with charity.
"Let every college professor
and every editor put that chal
lenge to Sen. McCarthy." -

like to have a tapir. He's a zoo sup

of one or more free from Vene

can't take it or them now. It's
too cold. The tapir. Is from the

zoo hasn't either available right
now. Hill hopes he can arrange
to have the tapirs sent next summer.
