Dairy Industry
Asks Full-Time
Commission
Oregon dairy Interests proposal
for a full-time State Dairy Pro
ducts Commission was aired before
a ways and means subcommittee
of the 47th Oregon Legislature
Tuesday at the Capitol.
The dairy commission repre
sented by its secretary, Frank Het-
twer of Mt. Angel, is recommend'
ing a $160,326 budget for the bl
ennhrm, as compared with the cur
rent $132,000. The state budget de
partment had reduced the commis
sion's proposed budget for the
coming two years to SI 19.000.
Hettwer said the commission
plan has the backing of the Ore
gon Dairymen's Association at a
time when "the future is none too
bright for the dairy Industry and
every effort must be made to hi'
crease rather that reduce produc
tion."
Full-Time Executive
The commission secretary and
assistant now operate on a mileage
and per diem basis. The proposed
budget would provide a full-time
executive at salary up to $10,000
and an administrative secretary at
$3,400.
Funds for the commission come
from a levy of 1 cent per pound
on butterfat produced in May and
June, plus contributions from
creamery operators.
Sen. Angus Gibson, chairman of
the ways and means subcommittee,
said he considered $10,000 an ex
cessive salary for the proposed
executive secretary.
$40,000 Item
Considerable discussion also cen
tared on an Item of $40,000 for
use of the American Dairy Asso
ciation with headquarters at Chi
cago. Hettwer explained that this
association conducts a national ad
vertising campaign in the interest
of the dairy industry along with
an educational and promotional
program. It received $19,000 from
Oregon in the current biennium.
An additional $50,000 would go
to the Oregon Dairy Council for a
somewhat similar program. Hett
wer said programs of both the
American Dairy Association and
the Oregon Dairy Council had
proved valuable in the past.
Gibson asked If it would not be
better to spend the money assign
ed to the American Dairy Associa
tion with radio stations and news
papers in Oregon. Hettwer said
Oregon must depend to a large ex-
O. C. L. A- and under and pursuant
to the terms and provisions thereof,
do hereby declare each and all of the
foregoing and above-named corpora
tions dissolved, -and their articles of
incorporation revoked and repealed,
and all powers conferred by law upon
such corporations are hereby declared
inoperative and void.

hereunto set my hand and caused the
Seal of State to be hereunto affixed

SILVERTON Mrs. Herman
Goschie admits that for a : brief
time she was Inclined to believe
that the world was falling out be
neath her as she gazed out the
kitchen window and saw a hole
fully eight feet in diameter where
a short time before had been only
a nice, smooth, green lawiu.
Investigation revealed that sur
face soil over a long forgotten dug
welL 60 feet deep, had given away,
leaving only the dangerous hole.
Goschie, out of curiosity, began
inquiries of former owners . in
cluding the Ray Dullums and the
Mike Thompson families. The well
had been in operation 35 years ago
and It was recalled that a well
tower and windmill had once stood
over the spot.

knew when its use had been dis

timbers could be seen, rotted at
the ends, which had been laid

The spot was boarded off im
