M.Sgt. Sheldon W. Cunningham,

Alaska and has been assigned to

the Army for the past 15 years.

John Coats, 11, of 2260 Claude
Ave., received several lacerations
Monday when a carbon-dioxide
cartridge exploded in a bonfire he
and other children were playing
in. The boy was treated by Salem
first aidmen and sent to a doctor.

DECORATED TREE TAKEN
A decorated Christmas tree was
taken from the lobby of the Lee
Apartments, 585 N. Winter St.,
sometime late Sunday night. Man
ager Robert Fischer reported the
nee stood about two feet 'high,
was sprayed with blue paint and

2-Car Accident
Damages Autos
A two-car accident Monday at
North VVinter and Hood Streets re
sulted in considerable damage to
both autos, but no injuries to driv
ers or passengers.
One car was driven by Agnes
Florence Nielson, Stayton, and the
other by Lloyd Lowell Kinian, To
ledo, Ore. Weather was described
in police reports as clear and the
pavement dry. No citations were
issued.

Guard Distributes
Gifts for Children
More than 50 gifts of toys and
candy were taken to needy chil
dren of the Salem area Monday
night as Salem's National Guard
Company D, 162nd Infantry,
played Santa.
All members of the unit took
part in the donation, while sev
eral men and their wives wrapped
and distributed the presents, un
der direction of Sgt. Ben Nelson.
This project replaced the unit
and children's parties of former
years.
Percy Jennings,
Ex-Valely Man,
Dies in Colorado
Percy E. Jennings, Polk County
native and former Salem resident,
died recently at his home in Den
ver, Colo., friends and relatives
learned this week. He was 66.
The son of Polk County pioneers
Tom and Mary Jennings, he at
tended Spring Valley grade school
and the old East School in Salem.
He studied business administra
tion in Salem, later spent most of
his life in the hotel business in
Portland. He moved to Denver in
1948. e
One sister, Mrs. Evangeline
Smith of Laramie, Wyo., survives.
A niece, Mrs. Dorothy Aeschli
mann, lives in Salem. The funeral
was in Denver and burial in Port

Scout Field
Executive to
Get Promotion
John Y. Klapp of Salem, field
executive in the Cascade Area
Boy Scout Council, will leave soon
for scout work in Yakima, Wash.,
it was announced Monday.
Klapp . will be assistant execu
tive in the Central Washington
Area Council, a council similar in
size to the Cascade unit, according
to Gordon Gilmore, Salem scout
executive.
The transfer repesents a pro
motion for Klapp, who has been in
the local council for about three
and one-half years, Gilmore said.
While here Klapp was in charge
of the Polk and Silver Falls dis
tricts. He is to report for duty in Yak
ima, Jan. 15. His successor has
not yet ; been selected, Gilmore
said.
Prior to joining the Cascade
council staff Klapp taught school
in Dallas, following his release
from World War II duty with the
U.S. Marine Corps. He resides at
2730 Sedona Ave., with his wife
and young daughter, Karen, and
newborn son, Stephen. i
"Klapp has done an outstand
ing job in this council, said Gil
more "We hate to lose him, but
we know he deserved this new
opportunity."

Harry Worth
Succumbs to
Heart Illness
Harry R. Worth, former owner
of what is now Roberts Brothers
store, died Monday at his resi
dence, 490 Leslie St, following a
heart illness of the past four
years.
Worth, who retired in 1947, was
born Oct. 8, 1881, at Charlotte
town, Prince Edward Island, Can.
He came to the United States in
the early 1900s, settling first in
Seattle, Wash. He later moved to
Chehalis where he opened a store
and in 1921 he moved to Salem
where he purchased the W. W.
Moore store here. He operated this
business until his retirement and
selling to Roberts Brothers.
Worth was a member of the
Episcopal Church and the Knights
of Pythias as well as a former
member of the Kiwanis Club and
the Salem Cherrians.
Survivors include his widow,
Mrs. Irene Worth, Salem; daugh
ter, Mrs. Helen Pomeroy, Salem;
sisters, Mrs. Adelaide Naye, Seat
tle, Wash.; Mrs. Leah McKinney,
Kalamazoo, Mich., and Mrs. Janie
Sentner, Charlottetown, Prince
Edward Island; brothers, Fred
B. Worth, Vernon, B. C, and Per
cy W. Worth, Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island, and a
granddaughter, Diane Pomeroy,
Salem.
Announcement of services will
be made later by the Virgil T.

To Salvation Army
Several boxes each of canned
and other foodstuffs was turned
over to the Salvation Army Mon
day by employes in the contribu
tions section of the State Unem
ployment Compensation Commis
sion. The employes contributed the
food in a Christmas basket pro
gram which they substituted this
year for the usual office gift ex
change, according to David Cam
eron, contributions division supervisor.

Riley Given
4-Month Term
Sidney LaVern Riley, 824 N.
Front St., was sentenced Monday
to four months in the county jail
on a charge of obtaining money
by false pretenses.
Riley appeared in Marion Coun
ty Circuit Court to plead guilty to
the bad check charge.
Harvey DeForest, Kelso, Wash.,
also appeared in court for arraign
ment on a charge of non-support.
Although he had waived grand
jury indictment a week ago, his
motion yesterday for referral to
the grand jury was granted.

from the Ekman Funeral Horn
for Mrs. Pearl Nimnlcht, 68, who
died in her sleep Friday night and
was found Saturday by neighbors.
Her home had been at 809 North
Mill Street, where the had lived
for seven years. Her husband,
Wilbur Nlmnicht, was in Califor
nia at the time of her death.
She was born Dec. 11, 1887, lit
Indiana. Her widower 1 the only
known survivor.
