To Face Light
Agenda Monday
Scheduled business appears light
for Salem City Council at its
Christmas week meeting Monday
night, but Oareups may occur
over the long-pending fire truck
bids and tie vote for Ward 3 al
derman. City Attorney Chris J. Kowitz
is slated to report again on the tie
between incumbent Claud Jorgen
sen and Clayton Jones, who were
candidates in November for the
Ward 3 seat. Kowitz had ruled
that with no legal means of break
ing the tie, the incumbent could
keep the office.
Jones made a formal bid for the
office to the Council at its last
meeting. This was referred to the
attorney. Jones said Saturday he
would consult his own attorney
and would appear at the meeting
Monday in City Hall!
Council members have so far
shown little disposition to initi
ate any settlement of the tie vote
beyond accepting legal advice that
Jorgensen apparently is entitled
to keep the office.
The fire truck bids are in the
hands of a special committee of
aldermen. This group had earlier
recommended that specifications
be redefined and new bids called
for, which was done. Low bidder
both times was the maker of Sea
graves fire truck equipment, which
has been purchased by the city
two or three times in recent years.
In legislation ready for final ac
tion there is one zone change, so
far uncontested. This would per
mit establishment of a drive-in
restaurant on Center Street across
from Capitol Shopping Center.

said Saturday that next year's

one-story building at 1005 S. 12th
St. to house his business, the Elec
tric Motor Service Co. The firm

years.
New quarters were prompted
by expansion of the business
which services industrial motors.
Contractor for the building is

Record Birth
Ratein County
41most Certain
An almost certain new annual
birth record for Marion County,
the second in three years, was in
dicated Saturday by the county
health department.
Births reported through Dec. 15
totaled 2,618, only 47 under the
year's record of 2,663 set In 1950.
At the rate of births so far in
December has averaged seven per
day, which, if maintained, will put
the total past the 2,700 live births
mark this year.
Through November, the boy-girl
ratio of births was holding to the
usual trend, with totals of 1,302
to 1,211
The busiest day reported recent
ly; was Dec. 2, when 14 babies ar
rived in the county, according
to" reports to the health depart
ment. As usual births are ahead of
deaths by a 3 to 1 ratio. While
births during the past five years
have shown a gain of more than
30 per cent over the previous five
year period, deaths have been
barely equal.
.From 1943 through 1947, deaths
totaled 4,010, compared to 4,150
from 1948 through Dec. 15, 1952.
Births rose from 9,605 to 12,716
in comparable periods.
