Here Tonight
Calif ornlans Tally
67 to 55 Victory
By AL MGHTNE
8Utesma.il Sports Editor
Using clever and intricate screen
plays which sprung their author
loose for one good shot after an
other, the barnstorming Sacra
mento Staters last night made a
sweep of their five-game invasion
of Oregon by thumping Willam
ette's Bearcat 67 to 55 in too WU
Gym.
Prior to the WU game, the Sacs
downed So. Oregon, Lewis 8c
Clark. Linfield and Paeific Coach
Hal Wolfe (he used to be the men
tor at Pacific U) now takes his tri
umphant outfit back to California.
The Bearcats go right back into
action tonight, taking on the Whit
worth Pirates of Spokane in the
- WU Gym. Whitworth is said to
have one of the biggest teams in
the nation, with a pair of 6-10
giants included. They recently beat
the Washington State Cougars.
Cats Hold Lead
Johnny Lewis young Bearcats
gave a whopping account of them
selves against the touted Sacs for
the first half last night, but then
turned frigid in the third period
to score only six points. This
draught proved disasterous, for
visitors went ahead 46-37 at tho
finish of tho third frame after
Willamette had enjoyed a 31-29
halftime bulge.
The Bearcats, employing their
fast break offensive to advantage,
and holding their own in the re
bound department, climaxed a tor
rid, first quarter by leading, 21
19. Sacramento's deliberate "set-em-up"
style of play, plus soma
fine defensive work by the Cats,
slowed things down so that each
side could score but 10 points in
the second quarter.
While the Cats were mired in
the third period scoring rut, the
Sac's Center Tom Brian and For
ward 'George Larson beat a tattoo
on the WU basket to provide the
Stater lead. Larson and Joe Gey
er kept it up in the final period,
and despite a rallying surge sup
plied by the Cats' Dick Mase,
Jerry McCallister, Jack Scrivens
and Bill Colvard, the resident
quint couldn't catch up.
Georgia Play Maker
With six-footer Chris Georgis
directing the traffic as playmak
er, the Sacs repeatedly set up
dazzling plays to cut either Brian,
Larsen or Geyer loose for, shots.
Both Brian and Larsen - had 20
points for their evenings and Gey
er finished with 14.
Mase with 12 markers was the
only Bearcat able to hit double
figures in scoring.
In a preliminary game the
YMCA City League team won a
46-35 victory over tho Warner
Motors outfit.
Tonight's prelim will pit the
WU Frosh against the Wy-East
High team, coached by former WU
great Jim (Chub) Johnson. That
one starts at 6:30 o'clock, the
Whitworth-Willamette clash at
eight.

Some Think Absence
Of Spring Work Hurts
NEW YORK m Last winter
the presidents of tho eight Ivy

A few other colleges and groups
in other sections also eliminated
spring drills ; while most of them

Tho result was a south of tho

the nation s sports writers and
broadcasters.
In their replies to The Associated
Press post - season questionnaire,
67 experts saw harmful effects
such as poorer play and more in
juries as the result of the spring
practice ban.
Fifty - five saw no difference
in the results or some improve

lengthy trade talks between- the

immediate fruit, however.
