On Indochina
Base Eases
HANOI. Indochina W The
French high command reported
Saturday that Vietminh pressure
against the strongly fortified Na
San air base has eased off.
A French reconnaissance patrol
moved two miles out of Na San
without meeting tny of the Com
munist-led beseigers who were in
the area three days ago.
About 18,000 Vietminh troops
closed in on Na San, 117 miles
west of Hanoi, r week ago. A
series of furious attacks have been
beaten off by the well-equipped
French defenders.
Capture of Na San would give
the Vietminh a major victory and
cement their recently won control
of most of the mountainous Thai
country.
On the Red River Delta front,
the French post of Yen Coha, in
the Phat Diem area 2 miles south
east of Hanoi, was captured by the
Vietminh Friday night. About 60
men had garrisoned the post.
Enemy pressure remained strong
in this area. A French mobile
force met Vietminh troops in
sharp engagement a few miles
from the captured post. French
reports said 180 Vietminh were
killed.

Takes It Easy
NEW YORKUfl The stock
market took a breather this week
after the sharp rise that has gone
on virtually without interruption
since late in October.
Brokers considered1 the pause in
the nature of a consolidation ac
tion that frequently follows, close
on the heels of a vigorous rise.
Throughout the week there
seemed to be a reluctance on the
part of traders and others to get
into the market, and volume
showed that atttude.
Total business for the week
came to 8,400.000 shares vhich
compares with 8,112,000 shares for
the four days the market wis open
last week.
The daily average at 1,680.000
shares was under each of the two
previous weeks but it is well above
the daily average so far this year
of around 1.202.000 shares.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks ended the week un
changed at $112.40, only 10 cents
under the new 19S2 high estab
lished last Tuesday.
urged renewal of the international
wheat agreement. -
In the closing session of its
annual meeting, the league also
asked continuation of the conser
vation program, through which the
government pays fanrers for
carrying out rpecified conservation
practicies.
The league recommended, how
ever, that incentive payments be
halted whenever a practice be
comes self-supporting on the farm.
Lester King, Helix, was elected
president, succeeding Floyd Root
of Wasco. Morris Wilson, Mayvjlle,
was named first vice president;
Kenneth Smouse, lone, second
vice-president. Richard K. Baum,

tary. Victor W. Johnson, Umatilla
County agent, was named assistant
