BURGLARY ATTEMPTED
: The attempted burglary of Walt's
Time Tavern at 515 S. 12th St
early Saturday was reported to
city police. Reports indicated en
: try was attempted by removing a
foundation block and going up
through the floor. An attempt also
was made to enter through
barred rear window.

Hear Brownell
Members of -the Willamette Uni
versity legal aid clinic and guests
attended a luncheon Saturday noon
with Emery Brownell, head of the
National Legal Aid Association,
from Rochester, N. Y.
"Willamette is pioneering In the
use of a legal aid system for per
sons normally unable to afford
such assistance," Brownell told the
group. .
Among others present at the
meeting in the Senator Hotel were
Dr. G. Herbert Smith, president of
Willamette; Seward P. Reese, dean
of Willamette's law school; several
local and district judges; represen
tatives of the Marion County Wel
fare Association and members of
Willamette's law school faculty.
Brownell was invited to speak
in Salem by Dean Reese who had
talked with the man recently in
San Francisco, Calif, while at
tending the American Bar Asso
ciation convention there.
SUSTAINS LACERATIONS
John Schoenbaecher, Portland, a
former patient at the Oregon State
Hospital, was treated Saturday for
two deep lacerations on his fore
head, sustained when he fell at a
downtown hotel. At his own re
quest, he was committed to the
state hospital. ,

Contract Awarded
PORTLAND JP) - The Corps of
Engineers S a t u rday announced
award of a $51,472 contract for
building bank protection works on
the WUlamette River at Kentucky
and Murphy's - bars near Inde
pendence. ,
The contract went to General
Construction Company, Portland.
The engineers said Pruitt Build
