We have come to accept the
fireplace as the most logical focal
point of the living room and to
feature it by grouping our import
ant pieces of furniture around it.
This is a relatively simple matter
when the hearth is well-situated
(architecturally) say, center in
s long wall, or on an end walL But
the hearth that is off-centeror
the corner fireplace very often
presents a decorating handicap.
The corner fireplace is particu
larly difficult if the room is smalL
Never place a sofa across the
front f a corner fireplace. To do
so cuts the room in half diagnoal
ly. Keep the sofa, and large chairs,
back again the walls. Use a small
grouping near the fireplace. ,
The sketch above shows how
the difficulty presented by an off
center fireplace has been sur
mounted. The mantel has been ex.
tended with plywood and made to
sppear centered. Wallpaper .that
looks like marble has been applied
to the plywood and continued
on across the mantel, giving a uni
fied effect. : - -

glamorizes the entire vtalL This
forms an attractive center-of-interest
around which comfortable
roomy lounge chairs are grouped
