Summertime
Dessert Gives
Refreshment
Ambrosia, the delightful combi
nation of fresb oranges and shred
ded coconut, is appropriately
named. According to the diction
ary, the word ambrosia means
'food for the gods', and home
makers who serve this dish agree
that the meaning is true. At one
time, Ambrosia was a traditional
dessert served at only the most
important holiday dinners
throughout the South. Now its
popularity has spread throughout
the country and it is served year-
around in all parts of America as ' ed in.

Problem Pieces
Washed Now
Ideal weather for drying laun
dry outdoors . is sunny, ' dry and
breezy. So at this time of year
many homemakers tackle the big
heavy pieces like quilts, heavy
bedspreads, shag rugs, draperies,
thick robes or pillows. These are
special laundering problems,
whether done by hand, non-automatic
or automatic washers,
household equipment specialists of
the U. S. Department of Agricul
ture say. Any woman who has
washed them by hand knows how
awkward and heavy they are to
handle and lift
Much effort. Is saved by mach
ine-washing, but even with an
automatic, you need to stand by
and give the machine some help
by hand. Pillows, because ! they
hold air, tend to float on top of
the water and need to be pushed
down by hand to be washed
thoroughly. The other large pieces
need to be distributed during
washing and rinsing so that the
load is well-balanced for the ma
chine to wash and rinse thorough
ly. Most automatic washers now
adays can be hand-controlled for
such Jobs. Others are not suited
to laundering these problem
pieces.
The Experiment Station reports
that shag rugs and feather pillows
proved particularly difficult to
wash in agitator and pulsator
types of automatics. j
