A contemporary modern home with flat top roof was built this past year by the Philip Brandts. The
house is Ideally situated in the Zenda district overooking the Polk County hills. Above, in the living
room -which features ceiling to floor windows, are the Brandts' three children, Phil, Lark and Biily. Directly
above, is Mrs. Brandt, a landscape architect, in her studio, which also has a picture window to the
floor. The studio is off the living room on a lower level with brick steps leading down.
Mrs. Brandt designed the house herself and she and her husband did a great deal of the inside
work and finishing. The house was designed for modern, easy living to reduce the amount of housework.
As the kitchen is the central working area for the housewife, Mrs. Brandt planned the children's play
area opposite, so that she may watch them while at work. The dining area and living room are to the
left of the kitchen. The rooms are all of hemlock and cedar, with cement floors, a brick entrance way
with sliding glass front door. The living room features a corner fireplace with marble hearth, built-in
benches and cabinets. The bedrooms also feature built-in wardrobes and dressing tables. The outside
of the house is of cedar and a brick walk encircles the structure.
