Hugh Luby, Salem manager,
broke a record that had stood the
test of time for 11 years on June
S6 when he participated in his
29th consecutive game at second
base without making an error.
Through games of Monday, June
30, Luby had extended it to 32
games.
The old record of 28 games was
et by Frank Kolski of Yakima,
from July 17 through August 12,
1941.
Salem continued as top fielding
team with a .972 percentage, nine
higher than Tri-City. The Senators
also led in double plays with 8L

HELSINKI (JP)-A screen of "Red" tape was raised Monday to
shield Communist athletes from Western eyes before their appear
ance at the Olympic Stadium on July 19.
Although only a handful of athletes and technicians have arrived
at the Eastern lands separate i
training camp at Otaniemi, it is
now increasingly evident that op
portunities to watch them train or
interview them 'will be hard to
come by, il not impossible.
Originally, the procedure was
to contact the Otaniemi camp com
mandant and he was supposed to
relay requests ior interview! to
team captains.
The new method is to contact
first the Olympic attache of the
country in question and obtain his
permission to begin negotiations
with the camp commandant.

Olympic attache, were unavailing.

HELSINKI. Finland (A) - The
American flag was raised over the
Olympic village for the first time
Monday.
It flew for the Puerto Rican
team of 23 members which ar
rived here over the week-end. The
games run from July 19 through
Aug. 3.
The Canadian, Korean and Pak
istan flags also were -hoisted for
the first time. This brought the
number of flags flying over the
Olympic village to six. The Jap
anese and Ceylonese banners went
up Saturday.

The Portland Beavers go on the
Coast League road this week,
opening a series at Oakland Tues
day night. The Oaks, with newly
added players, have been making
a strong bid for the league lead
in recent weeks, and Sunday as
sumed the pinnacle, taking over
from Hollywood.
Other league series opening
Tuesday night have Seattle at Los
Angeles, San Francisco at San
Diego and Hollywood at Sacra
mento. The Beavers return to their
home park a week from Tuesday
night to play the Los Angeles
Angels.

League players Monday asked for
a raise in the minimum baseball
salary from $5,000 to $6,000
year.
Freddie H u t c hinson, retiring
spokesman for the Junior circuit
players, included the salary boost
among 11 demands made to the
owners.
Hutchinson, only last weekend
appointed manager of the Detroit
Tigers, said the salary increase
was necessary because of higher
living conditions, high taxes and
high prices. The $5,000 minimum
was instituted in 1947.
