Olympic marks Sunday to estab
lish themselves as contenders- at
Helsinki in their first summer
Olympic appearance since 1938:
Werner Lueg, a 20-year-old sur
prise, turned in the feature per
formance of the Olympic quali
fication trials by equalling tho
world record for 1,500 meters with
a time or . minutes 43 seconas.
In the two-day qualifying meet.
Germans also beat Olympic rec
ords in three other events tho-
hammer throw, 3,000 meter
steeplechase, and women's shotput
and tied the Olympic record in
the women's 80 meter hurdles.'

kers-Koen, flying Dutch housewife
who again is Holland's best hope
for Olympic gold medals, will en
ter four events at Helsinki the
100-meter dash, 200-meter dash.
80-meter hurdles and 400-meter
relay.
In Sunday's national champion
ships, she set a world record for
100 meters in 11.4 seconds, one
tenth of a second faster than the
record she shared with Helen Ste
phens (USA) of 11.5 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash she es
tablished a Dutch record of 23.7
seconds and equalled her own
world record of 1 1 seconds for the
80-meter hurdles.
