HURT IN FALL
John Douglas, about 70 years,
220 S. 23rd St., was hurt in a fall
from a cherry tree in the back
yard of his home. He was taken
to Salem General Hospital with a
possible fractured back
DISEASES REPORTED
Very few communicable diseases
have been reported this week by
Salem and county physicians. In
Salem one person has conjunctiv
itis, one has German measles, one
has meningitis and one has
broncho pneumonia. In the county
one person has chickenpox and
two have measles.

TRIPS OVER DOG
Leslie D. Twecten. 46, of 1175 E.
Rural Ave., tripped over a dog in
the dark at the rear of his home
Tuesday evening and suffered a
possible spine iniurv. He was
treated by Salem City Ambulance
crew and taken to Salem General
Hospital.

Bishop, Dallas resident for four
years, will be held at 2 p.m.
Thursday at Dallas Foursquare
Gospel Church under direction of
the Bollman Mortuary. The Rev.
' William E. Cross will officiate.
Mrs. Bishop, a former Macleay
resident, died Sunday at her home.
Born March 10, 1876. at Westport,
Ind., she was married to I. M.
Bishop at Albany, Ind., March 27,
1903. Surviving besides the wid
ower are a daughter, Mildred
Wells, In California: a son, How
ard Updyke. in New York; and a
sister. Minnie Samuels, Muncie,
Ind.

from peace to wartime operation

Joins Salem
Marines Staff
Sgt. William R. Kitchin, young
Marine who has had tw hitches
with the Corps in the past four
years, this week joined the inspector-instructor
staff for Salem Ma
rine reserve.
Kitchin has gone on extended
active duty only a month after his
latest release from service. He was
in the Marines through 1949 at
Bremerton, Wash., then recalled
to duty in March, 1951, and sta
tioned at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Between the periods of duty.
Kitchen returned to Sweet Home
High School to graduate. He and
his wife and week-old daughter
are residing at 185 S. Winter St.
SCROGGINS REAPPOINTED
Ralph Scroggins of Lebanon was
reappointed Tuesday to the State
Board of Aeronautics by Gov.
Douglas McKay. The term is five
years.
The governor also reappointed
J. C. Renie of Klamath Falls to
the State Watchmakers Board.

For Convention
Some 50 members of Salem's
Wllamette Aerie, Fraternal Order
of Eagles, will be in Albany for
the annual stae convention, be
ginning Thursday.
This will include the men's and
women's drill teams, captained by
S. L. Griffin and Mrs. Bernice
Fletcher, who will compete Friday
night.
State committees are to have
pre-convention meetings today and
Salem will be represented by Sec
retary L. A. Hamilton on the drum
corps committee.

Extortion Try
Case Dismissed

Portland Detective Michael
i O'Leary, accused of attempting to
i extort $10,000 from a Portland
naturopath, were dismissed in cir
cuit court here Monday.
The motion for dismissal was
made by the district attorney's
office.
O'Leary was Indicted jointly
with another detective, William L.
Brian. Brian was acquitted recent
ly. Brian still faces trial, however,
on another extortion attempt
charge.
The naturopath, Mrs. Ruth Bar
nett, is under indictment on a
charge of manslaughter by abor
tion. The case has not vet come to
trial.

Ian It. Ross Dies in
British Columbia
Death of Ian R. Ross, 25, nephew
of- Mrs. Albert Kloos of Salem,
Monday in Trail, B. C, was re
ported here Tuesday.
Ross, wTio died after a lengthy
illness, had visited in Salem many
times. He is survived by his wife
and parents. Mr. and Mrs. KJoos
and son, Charles, and daughter.
Alberta of Portland, will attend
the funeral Friday in Vancouver,
B. C.
