Dayton Farmer To Get Hearing In Shooting Case McMINNVTLLE Casper Smith, Dayton Route 2 farmer, was lodged in the Yamhill County jail on a charge of assault with intent to kill, is to have a preliminary hear ing Wednesday. He is held under $12,000 bond. Smith has told officers he fired a shotgun blast at his estranged wife, Esther after a reconciliation Sunday, June 8. She threw up her left arm to divert the blast and their daughter wrenched the gun from her father's hand as he was reloading for a second shot. , Mrs. Smith was reported in sat isfactory condition at St. Vincent's Hospital, Portland, following am putation of her left arm. SCHtJMAN PLAN WINS ROME (Jp)- Italy ratified the S c h u m a n coal-steel pool plan over-riding Communist opposition in the chamber of Deputies by a 265-98 vote Monday night. The Senate gave its approval to the ratification last March. General Cancels Incorrect Map In a letter to Oregon congress man Walter Norblad, Lt. Gen. J. M. Swing stated that an error laden transportation map would "be withdrawn completely." The map, object of criticism by Norblad who said lt contained "glaring errors", was said by the general to be "informational only and not used for planning." He agreed that the errors should be corrected. Swing is commanding general of the Sixth Army at the presidio of San Francisco, Calif. He also stated, "Please be as sured that the maps with which we do our planning are most accurate." Silverton Elects Rutherford And Goschie Statesman News Service SILVERTON Herman Gos chie and Ted Rutherford were elected to the Silverton district school board in a heavier-than-usual voter turnout Monday. Goschie was elected to fill out three-years of the unexpired five year term of C. C. Parton, who resigned to move to Spokane, Wash. Goschie was appointed last November to fill the vacancy un til Monday's election. Goschie received 155 votes. His opponents were Elvin Almquist, 99 votes, and R. G. Smith, 66 votes. Rutherford received 190 votes to win the regular five-year term on the board, replacing Lloyd Larsen, retiring chairman. Ruth erford's opponent, Dr. W. E. Grod rian, received 129 votes. Observ ers said Monday's voter turnout ! was about triple the usual number. Stauffer on School Board at Hubbard HUBBARD Robert Stauffer I was elected to the board of direc I tors of Hubbard Grade School I District 156 at an election here Monday njght. I Stauffer received 16 of the to 1 tal 27 votes cast. His unsuccess : ful opponent, Harold Abbot, re ceived 11. New chairman of the I school board is Odell Mortensen, : succeeding outgoing board mem I ber Howard Jones. The other ! member of the three-man board with Stauffer is Manton Carl. Lemuel Viers, Dallas, Dies Statesman New lerrlce DALLAS Lemuel E. Viers, resident of Dallas for the past 31 years, died at his residence, 209 Clay St., late Sunday at the age of 84 years. Services are to be held In the Portland Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. (DST) Wednesday with Dr. Earl Benbow officiating and vault entombment in Portland. Services are under the direction of the Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas. Born In Flora, Ohio, July 7, 1867, Viers married Lillian Evans Nov. 7, 1889, at Liberty Center, Ohio. He was a retired employe of the International Harvester Company in Chicago, 111., and had been a fruit farmer in Dallas. He had recently received his 30 year pin in the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include two daugh ters, Mrs. James Inglis and Mrs. Lawrence J. Smith, both of Dallas; a sister, Mary V. Woods, Columb ana, Ohio, and a brother, Harry B. Viers, Fresno, Calif. Four grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild also survive. Captain Rowan Freed from Duty Capt. Leonard Rowan who left for the Far East Oct. 11, 151, ar rived in San Francisco, Calif., recently and was released from active duty. The captain Is a partner In the firm of Thompson - Hendrickson Logging Company at Detroit, Ore. He was called to duty with the 409th Quartermasters reserve unit from here in 1950.
