School.

The commencement address was
delivered by former state super
intendent of schools, Charles How
ard of Salem. Awards were pre
sented by H. W. Bowers, principal,
to Charlene Buyserie, valedicto
rian; George Shaw, salutatorian;
"Charlene Buyserie. Readers Digest
award; Clifford Blanchette, class
athlete; Robert Powell, citizenship
award; Jacky Gooding and Clif
ford Blanchette, sportsmanship
awards; Daughters of American
Revolution good citizenship award
to Charlene Buyserie, and a $600
scholarship to Pacific University
to George Shaw.
A music scholarship was award
ed to Maxine Ernst to Marylhurst
College. Joseph Pohlschneider pre
sented diplomas to the graduates.
Mrs. Rose Coleman played the pro
cessional and recessional and Fa
ther Maxwell delivered the invo
cation and benediction. Musical
numbers were furnished by Betty
Frith and Maxine Ernst.

JEFFERSON Mrs. Roy Wick
ersham left Wednesday for Se
attle, Wash., to join her sister,
Mrs. Ella Farmer. They both then
will leave for Dunseith, N. D., to
attend the funeral for their father,
Peter L. Melhus, who died in that
city this week.
Mrs. Julia Mejstrick, mother of
Mrs. J. C. Bentley, died this week
at the St Mary's nursing home in
Portland following a long illness.
Mrs. Bentley accompanied the
body to Lewiston, Idaho, where
the funeral v'as held Thursday.
The Mejstrick family lived here at
one time on the farm on Talbot
Road now occupied by the
Bentleys.

Snod grass of McMinville as Amity
water superintendent at a salary
of $200 per month was made by
Amity City Council early last
week.
Snodgrass, formerly chief of
police at Amity, assumed his new
duties Tuesday. Harry Fast of
Sheridan is temporary chief of
police. Applications for permanent
appointment are being considered
by the council.
The council, at its meeting,
turned down a request asking that
local beer taverns be permitted to
remain open until 11 pjn. on
Sundays.

Sink Lower
CHICAGO Wheat sank a
little lower on the Board of Trade
Saturday as harvesting expanded
in the Southwest and parts of the
Northwest received moisture with
more forecast for the weekend.
Wheat closed to lower,
corn Vt lower to Vi higher, oats
unchanged to V higher,, rye V to
1 V lower, soybeans 4 lower to
34 higher, and lard 2 to 8 cents
a hundred pounds lower.
Saturday's action left wheat 2Vi
to 2Vz lower for the week while
corn was Vt lower to higher,
oats IV lower to V higher, rye
6V4 to 1 0 cents higher, soybeans
5Vz to 13Y4 higher and lard 52 to
60 cents a hundred pounds lower.
Stocks Banish
Bearish Gloom
NEW YORK (JP) Wall Street
banished its bearish gloom this
week, and the stock market
marched ahead to a new 22-year-high.
That led many to conclude that
the traditional summer rally had
started with a good bounce. This
was the first five-day week of the
four-month summer schedule.
The average advanced $2 on the
week, the second biggest weekly
gain of the year, and at the close
stood at $105.30. That's the highest
it has been since June 13, 1930.
