Al Capone's
Taxes Slashed.
Senator Says
WASHINGTON (A)- Sen. Wil
liams (R-Del) . told the Senate
Tuesday the Treasury let the late
gangster Al (Scarf ace) Capone
and some notorious associates set
tle $1,011,650 of tax claims In
1942 for $130,000.
He said the Treasury Depart
ment's explanation would be "dif
ficult for the average taxpayer to
accept.
For several months, Williams
has been digging into operations
of the Bureau of Internal Reve
nue. He has made a series of
speeches criticizing it.
Williams said he had learned
that in 1942:
1. Greasy Thumb Guzik, one
time treasurer and collector for
the Capone gang in Chicago, set
tled for $100,000 a batch of in
come tax liabilities which totaled
$892,283.79.
2. Al Capone and others, in
eluding Guzik, settled for $30,000
in 1942 a claim for $119,367 in
taxes on the sale of beer.
Williams said "it was not until
after the recent exposures in the
tax bureau had begun that any
aggressive action was taken by
the Department of Justice" against
Capone's brother, Ralph Capone,
who, he said, is seeking a com
promise of tax delinquencies, in
terest and penalties totaling $92,-814.38.
"The net result," Williams as
serted, "is that for the past 25
years the federal government has
been financing Ralph Capone s
racketeering operation to the ex
tent of nearly $93,000 without
even collecting any interest, and
today they are on the verge of
setling the unpaid claim for an in
significant fraction of its total."

Drops Sharply
WASHINGTON (JP) Meat pro
duction has dropped to the lowest
level in eight months, largely be
cause of an unusually heavy sea
sonal decline in farm sales of
hogs.
Reporting this Tuesday, the Ag
riculture Department said that
u t p u t by federally inspected
slaughterers totalled 275.000,000
pounds last week. This compares
with 285,000,000 pounds the pre
vious week, 286,000,000 a year ago
and the peak of about 400,000,000
last winter.
