Rolfe Remains
As Tiger Head
DETROIT (.-Pi-Red Rolfe will
stick around as manager of the
Detroit Tigers, who are uncom
fortably berthed in last place in
the American League.
But the Tigers will try to gain
strength or new faces in the trade
ma:t even if it means dealing
out such stars as third baseman
George Kell or outfielders Hoot
Evers, Johnny Groth or Vic Wertz.
That came straight from gen
eral manager Charlie Gehringer
Monday after he huddled with
president Spike Briggs.
He laughed when newspaper
men told him the local rumor mill
had listed either Schoolboy Rowe,
Muddy Ruel, Jack Tighe, George
KeJ, Fred Hutchinson and Diz
Trout as the next Detroit man
ager. "Ked has done all right," he
said. "I don't quite agree with
him on his not using the younger
boys more. But I can see why he
hasn't used them. When you're
losing, you can't afford to gamble.
You play it close to the belt."

th Loucks committer is trying to pull a fast one in their
campaign literature? They claim to have lowered the millage
rate from 24.7 to 22.4 mills since 1946. This is true enough,
but We thought Al Loucks had only been mayor for a year
end a half. What makes it more amusing, - in another cam
paign, this one for state representative, the same tired old
political machine, that's been ruling you so long, is claiming
the identical millage reduction for the preceding mayor
during his term of office. Well . . . we don't care which
one-of these machine representatives heroically lowered the
millage, -the whole point is that taxes have INCREASED a
full 36 in the past two years in actual dollars taken In.
They've smoothly increased the property value in Salem
from about $17 million in 1946 to about $32 million in
1951. No wonder they can reduce the millage and still wind
up with the highest tax collections in history. Let's get out
of the Red with Ed. Give Randle the Reins.
