Madsen Farm Editor, The Statesman Unless you spend 40 per cent of your food dollar for dairy pro ducts you are not living as eco nomically as you could, Beale Dixon, manager of the Tillamook Creamery Association, told some 50 men and women at a dairy month kick-off dinner at the Sen ator Hotel Friday night. The meeting was the 20th of its kind held in the past fortnight in promotion of June Dairy Month in Oregon. Especially stressed are butter, milk, ice cream and cheese. Dixon outlined the food value In dairy products as compared to the same weights and measures in other food products. And the industry, he said, brings in $300, 000 to Oregon daily. Gordon Hofstetter, Salem dis tributor, was appointed Salem area chairman of the 16th annual observance of June Dairy Month in Oregon. He will work in con junction with other local distribu tors and dairy folk in publicizing one of the state's biggest indus tries. Ben Newell serving as master of ceremonies, said that "we'll see a lot of folk milking again who said five years ago they'd never milk another cow." In recent years, he said dairy barns were getting "emptier and emptier , but, he expected, the reverse would soon be happening as farm ers are finding that '"the monthly dairy check is pretty nice to have." Grass seed profits, fruit profits and other cropland profits have been dropping in recent years, Newell stated, as he foresaw folk returning to livestock on the farms. The next step in dairy improve ment, E. L. Peterson, state direc tor of agriculture, said, will be only one grade of milk. All milk which reaches consumption chan nels should be Grade A, Peter son stated. It will take time to bring this about, he added, but eventually this will be done. Professor P. M. Brandt, head of the dairy division of Oregon State College, reported that Withycombe Hall at Oregon State College would be dedicated May 24. Other speakers at the Friday night meeting were Anton Larsen, Portland, Oregon, June Dairy Month chairman; L. E. Francis, agricultural fieldman of, the First National Bank, Tillamook; Floyd Bates, Western Director of the American Jersey Cattle club; Frank Hettwer, manager of the Mt. Angel Creamery, and Hoff stetter. ported to police his glasses and dentures were broken when he was attacked by four men.
