late Monday defeated an effort by
Sen. Douglas (D-Ill.) to cut out
about 48 million dollars of federal
aid for highways in the fiscal year
starting July 1.
The Illinois senator said he re
alized he was attacking a "sacred
cow." But he said Congress must
find some way to economize for
fiscal 1953 in view of the 14 bil
lion dollar deficit proposed in
President Truman's budget.
Sen. Cordon (R-Ore.), opposing
the amendment, said it would
amount to a violation of a contract
with the states. He said the money
to be appropriated for fiscal 1953
had been allotted to the states long
before and that they were drawing
up programs in anticipation of
having it.

Purple Heart
WITH THE 40TH INFANTRY
DIV. IN KOREA Cpl. Johnie L.
Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
S. Cox, Route 2, Dallas, Ore., has
been awarded the Purple Heart
for wounds received in Korean
action on Jan. 22.
He is serving with Company B,
160th Infantry Regiment.
His unit is part of the 40th In
fantry Division, a California Na
tional Guard organization which
moved to Korea early this year
after 16 months of intensive train
ing in California and Japan.
Corporal Cox was inducted
Into the Army in November 1950.
He previously worked as a log
ger in the Dallas area.
