Sifweek coming up at Willamina, 25 miles northwest of Salem.
National Commander of Veteran of Foreign Wars, Frank C. Hilton of
Pennsylvania, will visit WlHamloa Post Monday night. is visit will
recognire huge membership gain
by the port. It's an open meeting
with all valley veterans invited . . .
And an intriguing election due
Thursday at Willamina. About 20
residents on the outskirts of town
are eligible to vote on an annexa
tion proposal that, if approved,
would approximately double the
city's area and assessed valuation.
Reason is the area includes big
industry, too ... On top of that.
Mayor Allen C. Louden has pro
claimed this as "Clean-Up Week
a't Willamina. Everyone asked to
break out a broom, and city will
collect trash . . . Mayor Louden
also lo announce "City Govern
ment Day" soon. High school
youths will fill city offices for a
day. Willamina Key Club and City
Council backing the event . . . And
today will see ground - breaking
for new Emmanuel Lutheran
Church at Willamina, a city of

Hubbard. Few months back aaembers came dressed as their "sap
pressed desire." One wtnn came as a man (Just any man) . . .
At April meeting members ware sorinc dresses made from mews
papers . . . This brings to mind the eld limerick: There once was
a miss from St Paul, whs went to a newspaper ball; bat the place
caurht on fire, and destroyed her attire: frsnt page, spsrt seetisn
and all."
Few Oregon towns have matched strides with Sweet Home dur
ing the population boom. From 1940 to 1950 the Sweet Home census
bounded from 1,090 to 3.603 (Blue Book figures), over a 300 per cent
gain for the logging community . . . Now friend John T. Russell
writes that church records fell there last week when 2,506 lumbered
into Sweet Home's 14 churches for Easter services . . . John says this
figure is not far about average attendance "which only proves that the
theory that all logging and lumbering centers are Godless places be
cause of ths rough element engaged in them is untrue."
Dsable Trsables: Larry Deural sf Lyons had a flat tire right
at heme last week. Changed it and went inside to find his bouse
a fire . . . Twt Dallas bike riders hit by cars daring week.
Frank DeSbon. 13. will be confined six weeks with broken pelvis;
bis bike was barely scratched. Freddie Otjen, t, came oat un
scathed in the other one; bike bo rode was badly damaged . . .
Some rabbits feet may be lucky bat the Easter bunny seems to
bake an unlucky one at Barbara Force, 14, at Four Corners three
Easters ago she was hospitalised for bone surgery on her right
knee. This Easter she was back for bone snrrery on other one.
Forty per cent of senior class married at Falls City Hih School.
But only 10 members in class . . . Out-of-town speaker at Chemawa
tree dedication Thursday called school "Chemawa several times . . .
But Chemawa is easy compared to "Ehweefs." the Indian name Swegie
Camp Fire Girls have adopted. This group has solved problem of how
to keep everybody happy. Elects new officers every month . . . Sup
ply pastor didn't arrive Easter morning at Grace Mennonite Church,
Dallas, where congregation upwards of 400 was assembled. From Dal
las, Tex., to Dallas, Ore., today comes speaker to fill pulpit at same
church . . . Salem Chin-Up Club sending letter of cheer to 11-year-old
Ohio girl, born without arms, after seeing; her picture in The
Statesman Thursday.
