These two routes, laid out by Salem Cherrtans who are sponsoring the Blossom Day observance, are approximately the same as In recent past years. The west loop Is reached via the West Salem bridge and the sooth tour over Sooth Commercial Street. and Liberty Road. Roadside arrows will plainly mark each rente. Hazel Ednof f Dies at Gervais Statesman New ferric GERVAIS Mrs. Hazel W. Ed noff, 58, resident of this area for about two years, died unexpected ly Thursday afternoo at her home. She came here from Los Ange les, settling a half mile west of Gervais. Mrs. Ednoff was born In Los Angeles March 7, 1914, and is a member of tho United Molokan Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, Alexander, of Gervais; two sons, Alexander Ednoff Jr. of Salem, and Jack of Los Angeles; parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Belikoff of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Mary Gusiff of Brooks. There are also four brothers and four sisters in Los Angeles. Friends may call at the Rlngo Funeral Chapel, Wood burn from 4 to 7:30 o'clock Friday afternoon. SALEM MEAT CO. 1325 So. ttth Phono S-4858 Annual Cherry Blossom Day Slated Sunday The Salem area's blossom-covered hills will be on display Sun day to thousands of sightseeing motorist-., thanks to the Salem Cherrians 38th annual Blossom Day observance. Uniformed Cherrians will be on hand all day Sunday to direct motorists over two prescribed routes one west and one south of Salem. Also planned Is a mu sic and speaking program on the steps of the Capitol Sunday after noon. Salem High School band will conduct a concert on the north steps beginning at 2 p.m. Speak ing will begin at 3 p.m. and will Include Gov. Douglas McKay, if he is in town, and State Treasurer Walter Pearson and Mayor Alfred Loucks. Cherrians will gather at the Capitol at 9:30 ajn. From there they will be directed by King Bing Paul Stege to prominent downtown intersections. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. they will distribute maps of the Blossom Day routes. To tourists the Cherrians also will distribute pamphlets, put out bj the State Highway Depart ment Travel Bureau, listing Ore gon's celebrations for April. Sightseers taking the west loop (see map) will cross the Willam ette River bridge into Polk Coun ty. They then go north on Wal lace Road to Orchard Heights Road, then west past Mountain View and Popcorn Schools and return via Brunk's Corner and the Salem-Dallas highway. The south tour proceeds south by Commercial Street and Liberty Road to Rosedalo Road, then east to 89E and back to Salem. Cher rians reported the orchards on the routes in excellent condition. Prison Terms Given Two in Circuit Court Two men were sentenced to State Penitentiary terms Thurs day in Marion County Circuit Court, and a third placed on pro bation. Carroll Marts, Salem, was sen tenced to five years in prison after changing his plea from Inno cent to guilty on a charge of for gery. It involved a $73 check passed last January in Salem. Lloyd Cross, Stayton, was giv en a two-year term on a cifarge of obtaining : money by false pre tenses, involving a worthless $0 check passed hers last month. A similar charge involving a check at Stayton was dismissed on mo tion of the district attorney for lack of sufficient svidence. Imposition of sentence was sus pended for Frank Hawkins, and h was placed oh three-years pro bation on a charge of burglary not in a dwelling:. '52 Budworm Program Set !n Four Units The spruce budworm control program for the year 1952 in Oregon will cover a total of 639, 8 Of acres, the State Forestry De partment reported Thursday. Of this 359,240 acres will be treated under direction of the Stfte Forestry Department. Four separate units are included in this program. These include the Waterman Flat of 41,000 acres, Minam 70,000 acres. Day Ridge 31,840 acres and Elgin 215,520 acres. Forest service units include the Willamette 73,000 acres, Mt. Hood 37,000 acres. Warm Springs 40, 000 acres, Touchet 35,360 acres and Ana tone 95,000 acres. Cost of the work in Oregon has been estimated at approxi mately $1.30 an acre or a total of $661,112. Division of the costs will be on the same basis as in previous years with the public agencies standing full cost of their own lands. On private lands tho forest service will contribute Statesman, Salonv Orscjon, Friday, April I6Y1S5J 23 cent cent of tho cost and the stats and private owners will split the balancs with 37 Mi per cent each. While there is still a large area of infestation in Oregon officials said they felt thatwith the spray ing of 639,000 acres during the current year, all areas in which tree killing would occur during the next two years would be controlled.
