"It's an ideal U-shaped, domestic-type kitchen any individual housekeeper would be proud to preside over," I was told by W. B. Stephens, vice president of the firm (Kitchens, Inc.) which put in all the new kitchens. This kitchen, directly ab ive the private family suite in the norh wine, boasts an electric range, re frigerator, dishwasher and garb age disposal unit, al' white -vails and stainlsi' steel sink and coun ter tops. The original main kitchen, on the ground floor, boasted two fire places. One of these was at one time used for cooking, but both are now blocked up. The room is now a TV and radio room. The main kitchen layout is now in the northwest portion of the building on the ground floor. It is 22 x 28 feet, light and sunny, with antiseptic, hospital -white spark ling walls and stainless steel rur faces. Electric ranges take up IS feet of the south wall, along with an immense, electrically-operated soup kettle that also serves as a coffee-maker. Some of the ranges are old. but rebuilt and cleaned up. On the east wall are double bowled sink and cabinets. There are more sinks on the north wall and a huge, heavy-duty garbage grinding unit. Cabinets and shelves take up the rest of fhe wall space, and in the center are steam tables and warmers and a table fitted with electric mixing gadgets. These are not only used for mixing things, but for slicing and grinding meats," Mr. Stephens said. They sit on the floor, are 4Vi feet high, with a bowl about IS inches across. On the floor above, the first floor of the White House, are the State and private dining rooms. Between them is a pantry that boasts a plate-warming unit, a dish-washer, a garbage disposer and coffee-maker. Here the silver and glassware is kept. The ser vants have their own pantry nd dining room. ly 4 cup quick- cooking oats with H cup flour, Vi cup coarsely chop ped walnuts.
