Steel Strike
Threat Drops
NEW YORK (AVA "narp selling
reatcion swept through the stock
market Tuesday as fears of a steel
strike spread.
The market hesitated, weakened
and then dropped sharply in final
stages of trading. A show of re
sistance flecked the list but did
little to stem the retreating tide
of prices.
Leading issues showed losses
running to around 3 points, anda
few broke between 5 and 10 points.
' The Associated Press average of
60 stocks lost a full dollar 1102.50.
That was the widest loss since
Feb. 20 when severe selling swept
the market to the lowest point of
the year.
Rails, oils, steel, motors, chemi
cals, non-ferrous metals, rubbers
and others Tuesday were engulfed
in the slide. A lot of individual
strength was based on corporate
developments.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks fell $1 at 1102.50 with the
industrial component down $1.20,
rails down $1.20, and utilities
down 30 cents.
Volume came to 1,720,000 shares,
well above the average so far this
year. Monday's total was 1,680,000
shares.
There were 1,156 individual Is
sues in the board list. Monday
there were 1,132 Issues. Only 233
advanced while 671 declined with
66 new highs touched on the up
swing and 39 new lows reached
for the year.

Half of Oregon
Farms Have
V
Phone Service
BY LXLUB L. MADSEX
Farm Editor, The Statesman
Only a little more than one-half
of the farms in Oregon have tele
phone service. This is somewhat
below the percentage for Wash
ington, Idaho and California.
Washington's percentage of rural
telephones runs higher than any
one other of the four western
states., Oregon's rural telephone
percentage is SU with Washington
57.5 and California, 57.4. Idaho's
runs to 55 J3.
These figures are the result of a
survey made recently by a rural
housing- and utilities committee
of which Mrs. Robert Hamilton.
Rlckreall, is a member.
The survey shows that in 1920
most farm telephone service was
provided by farmer-owned facili
ties. New, the vast bulk of it is
supplied bycommercial telephone
companies.
' On the other hand, the survey
shows that 91 per cent of the farms
in Oregon have electric service
and that 50.5 farm homes have
electric water heaters. A total of
83 per cent of the farm homes In
Oregon have electric washing ma
chines. Home freezers, relatively
new. developments, were found in
over 15 per cent of the farm homes
in late 1951.
The committee, with Mrs. Lee
Holliday, Klamath Falls, as chair
man, recommended at the recent
farm conference held at Corvallis,
that small telephone companies
would do better by merging, that
farmer-owned lines should sell out
to commercial telephone companies
and that rural patrons on estab
lished lines should urge the in
stallation of dial telephones as
rapidly as possible, and submit
complaints in a group when ser
vices are not satisfactory.
The committee showed that
farms in the Pacific Northwest use
much more power than farms in
other parts of . the United States
and that the supply of power here
is not equal to the demand, nor
will it be for some years to come.
However, farm use of power Is
expected to increase greatly in the
next 10 years. Farmers are urged,
by committee members, to sup
port measures to Increase power
supplies.
